The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Manages and maintains permanent collection of works of art on paper. Prepares both permanent collection objects and loaned objects as needed, coordinating with registrars and curators. Fabricates storage systems and display mounts for standard and unique 2D and 3D objects. Custom mats and frames 2D artwork for storage and exhibition. Contributes to database cataloging. Assists registrars during periods of gallery installations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains permanent collection of more than 7,000 works of art on paper.   Prepares works for storage and exhibition in accordance with professional museum standards; specifically, undertakes hinging, matting and framing.  Maintains and organizes both print prep and print storage rooms.  Maintains print room supplies. Consults with registrars and curators for conservation needs.
  • Fabricates storage containers for 3D objects. Creates exhibition mounts and troubleshoots for non-standard objects.  Seeks to improve archival standards and safe storage methods.
  • Manages bi-weekly dusting of permanent collection gallery spaces and assists registrars with monthly individual gallery cleanings. Under direction from registrars, assists with art handling, movement, various collection storage and installation activities.  Fabricates and installs gallery object labels. Assists with wall graphics and vinyl installation. Assists with exhibition/gallery lighting. Implements rotations and installations of exhibited works of art on paper with facilities team, registrar, and curator.
  • Catalogues new acquisitions and updates database object records of permanent collection works on paper.  Courier of works of art to national and international loan exhibitions. Provides public access to collection and behind-the-scenes for study upon request.  
  • Other duties as assigned


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate’s degree in appropriate discipline required.
  • Appropriate academic training in the fine arts or related field, with knowledge of graphic art techniques, specifically printmaking, art history and foreign languages preferred.
  • 2 years specialized experience in related field, including previous experience in preparing works of art on paper for storage and exhibition required
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Position requires specialized knowledge of professional techniques of handling and preserving works of art on paper, including archival matting, framing and storage procedures. Also requires attention to detail and organization and high degree of manual dexterity. Valid NY driver’s license and ability to utilize MAG and personal vehicles for art transport preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently and to exercise extreme care in handling fragile works of art..
  • Some knowledge of museum registration and exhibition methods.
