Position Information
The Library & Cultural Services Department is looking for a Front Desk Assistant. This role requires a friendly and customer service-oriented individual to perform receptionist duties and a variety of clerical and administrative support for the operation of the Bicentennial Art Center.
Hours for this position are some weeknights from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and alternating Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Occasional daytime hours during the week may also be required.
This is classified as a VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefited Employee), where the position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Answers and directs questions, inquiries, and concerns of visitors by telephone and in person.
Records attendance and visitor statistics.
Gathers information for various reports.
Registers customers in classes using City registration and Point of Sale (POS) system.
Processes payments and handles daily reconciliation of revenue.
Maintains security of facility upon opening and closing.
Conducts sales for Bicentennial Art Center using City POS system.
Operates a variety of office equipment.
Check in and out students for open hours.
Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
At least 1 year of clerical training/experience, including telephone and customer service experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Working knowledge of Active Net is helpful but not required.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of basic accounting
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
Skills:
Basic math skills and cash handling experience.
Skill in the use of windows-based programs.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
Strong customer service skills.
Abilities:
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, all levels of management including executive staff, citizens, and elected officials.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to work a varied schedule that includes days, nights, weekends, and possibly holidays.
Ability to work alone.
Ability to use general office equipment and personal computers and related software applications.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Essential Personnel:
When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
Occasional medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance at a time
Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
Clear vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents.
Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
Hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard, cash register, and telephone.
Variable hour coverage for both evening and daytime shifts.
Work Environment:
Works primarily in a dusty pottery studio environment.
Equipment Used:
Uses standard office equipment including personal computers and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel, and registration software such as Active Net.
This role may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.

Safety sensitive positions include Civil Service positions within Police and Fire Departments and positions where their job responsibilities have direct and substantial responsibility that would impact the health and safety of others.
