Position Highlights

SUMMARY:

The Licensed Practical Nurse in the Medical Department provides patient care for assigned patients utilizing the nursing process within the scope of practice for an LPN.  Provides care/service in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agencies. The individual in this position is responsible for providing care in a manner consistent with the values of St. Michael’s Hospital and in a manner that promotes a positive and productive work environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

Within the limitations and privileges outlined in the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act* and currently accepted professional standards the Licensed Practical Nurse will:

  • Demonstrate Accountability:  performing technical procedures necessary for the job responsibilities of an LPN in a safe, effective, efficient, legal and professional manner.  This includes communication, mentoring, acceptance of criticism, professional development, participation in organizational activities and stewardship of the hospital’s resources.
  • Demonstrate dependable attendance, and reliability:  Actively working to promote an environment based on trust, encouraging self and others to perform to their maximum potential, and promoting individual and mutual accountability.  This includes accurate completion of time cards and utilization of hospital resources, participation in meetings and in services, professional appearance, willingness to volunteer for extra duty, as needed, acceptance of responsibility, flexibility, and adaptation to change.
  • Demonstrates behavior compatible with the values of SMH: Continuously seeks to increase the quality and value of services provided to our customers, including patients, families, co-workers, physicians, accrediting bodies, suppliers payers, and etc.  This includes a display of excellent work, friendliness and attention to customer wants and needs, goal orientation, and organizational loyalty to SMH within the organization and the greater community.
  • Displays excellent interpersonal communication skills:  Demonstrates effective communication/interpersonal strategies and responds in ways that reflect the expectations of the organization and are satisfying to customers.  This includes maintaining confidentiality, resolving problems, recognizing and accepting cultural diversity, utilizing age appropriate communication, and using appropriate speaking, writing, and listening skills.
  • Utilizes Critical Thinking Skills:  Demonstrates problem-solving, decision making skills, and priority setting as necessary to perform the job duties at the LPN level.  This includes maintaining current knowledge of and adherence to hospital/department policies and procedures, solving problems constructively, demonstrating loyalty and teamwork, responding to unanticipated events calmly and appropriately, and making appropriate decisions.
  • Able to work rotating shifts.
  • Able to meet all physical demands of this position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduate of a licensed practical nursing curriculum or its equivalent.  Prefer 6-12 months experience on med-surgical unit.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must have current LPN licensure in the state of SD or “multi-state privilege” to practice in SD if residing in a compact state outside of SD. Current CPR certification or completion upon next available program.
