Position Overview

Gideon Hausner Upper School is seeking a part-time Math Specialist to provide individualized math instruction for students working significantly above grade level. This role was created in response to a specific need: our current math department, though highly capable, is teaching full-time across every available math period in the Upper School schedule, leaving no capacity to build or supervise additional individualized sections for students who have outpaced their grade-level math sequence.

The Math Specialist will work directly with these students, starting with at least one current fifth grader who completed Pre-Algebra in fourth grade and is now ready for Algebra 1, a level for which we do not currently have a fifth grade section.

Schedule

The role will operate within the existing fifth grade math schedule, or other periods as needed:

• Monday: 2:00-2:50 PM
• Tuesday: 9:10-10:00 AM
• Wednesday: 2:00-2:50 PM
• Thursday: 2:00-2:50 PM
• Friday: 2:00-2:50 PM

Key Responsibilities

• Provide individualized or small-group instruction in Algebra 1 and beyond for students working ahead of their grade-level math placement
• Work within the fifth grade math schedule above, rather than requiring a new standalone class block
• Collaborate with the Head of Upper School and the math department on identifying appropriate content, pacing, and assessment for accelerated students
• Coordinate with classroom teachers and administration on any scheduling accommodations a student may need to make an individualized math placement work
• Track and report on student progress to families and school leadership
• Help think through the longer-term structure for supporting mathematically advanced students as the program develops, since this is a new role responding to a need that has not yet been fully mapped out

Qualifications

• Strong content knowledge in Algebra 1 and above (through at least pre-calculus preferred)
• Experience teaching or tutoring mathematically advanced students, ideally including students significantly younger than typical for the material
• Comfort working with a flexible, evolving schedule and a student population of one or a small handful, rather than a full class roster
• Strong communication skills for coordinating with teachers, administrators, and families
• Prior experience in an independent or day school setting is a plus

Compensation

$65 per hour. This is a part-time, hourly non-exempt position bound to specific instructional periods rather than a full teaching load.

Additional Notes

This is a newly created, part-time position. The exact shape of the role, including hours and caseload, will be developed in partnership with the person hired. The immediate need is to serve one fifth grade student who is ready for Algebra 1, but the role may grow to support other students in similar situations as they are identified.
