MEP Engineer (Part Time, Florida)Are you a true generalist MEP engineer who can carry the full mechanical, electrical, and plumbing scope on a luxury custom home — and deliver systems that are as thoughtful as the architecture around them? Do you believe HVAC should run quietly, lighting should feel intentional, and plumbing should disappear until the moment someone reaches for the faucet? One of our Florida-based clients is looking for a Part-Time MEP Engineer to design high-end custom residences from Design Development through Construction Documents. This is a flexible, part-time role with availability to work aligned with Eastern Time (EST).
BetterPros unlocks human potential by offering competitive compensation, flexibility, constant learning and growth, and the opportunity to work anywhere you want with one of our +130 active clients across the United States.
What you'll do:
Mechanical: perform Manual J load calculations, Manual D duct design, and Manual S equipment selection. Specify HVAC equipment, design duct routing, and coordinate with framing and ceiling heights.
Electrical: develop load calculations, panel schedules, lighting plans, receptacle and switch layouts, and integrate generator and EV charging systems where applicable.
Plumbing: perform fixture unit calculations and design supply, waste, and vent layouts. Develop hot water systems including recirculation, tankless, and hybrid configurations.
Produce energy code compliance documentation.
Coordinate with the Chief Architect during Design Development to integrate MEP systems with the architectural intent.
Produce complete MEP drawings: floor plans by discipline, equipment schedules, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and key details.
Respond to construction-phase RFIs and substitution requests from subcontractors.
Maintain strict file discipline in Buildertrend: correct phase folder, correct naming, and correct revision tracking.
What you must have:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering — or equivalent technical background with a strong residential MEP track record.
Advanced English level, both written and spoken.
Minimum 5 years of residential MEP design experience covering all three disciplines, ideally on luxury custom residential projects.
Demonstrated proficiency in Manual J, D, and S methodology, or equivalent international standards.
Mechanical analysis: Wrightsoft, Trane Trace 3D Plus, or your preferred equivalent.
Drawing production: Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP.
Disciplined file management and willingness to follow drawing standards exactly.
A disciplined, responsible, and eager-to-learn mindset.
A great plus:
Direct experience with Florida building codes, or demonstrated ability to climb a steep code curve fast on previous projects.
Luxury custom residential experience where MEP integration is part of the architectural quality — concealed mechanicals, architectural lighting design, and custom fixture coordination.
Smart home integration experience: Crestron, Lutron, Control4, or equivalent.
Pool and spa mechanical design familiarity.
Geothermal or high-efficiency system design experience.
LEED, NGBS, or other green-building documentation experience.
