Job Description - Part Time - Academic Summer Day Camp - Counselor

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Location: Berks Campus, Reading, PA 
Schedule: Summer 2026 | 4-day or 5-day weekly sessions 
Hours: Between 20-35 hours per week depending on assignment 

About the Role 
We’re looking for energetic, responsible, and enthusiastic Summer Camp Counselors to support our academic day camps. Counselors play a key role in creating a fun, safe, and engaging environment while helping students stay curious, motivated, and confident as they learn. Our camps blend academics with hands-on activities, teamwork, and creativity—making learning feel like summer fun. 

Job Duties

  • Supervise and engage students throughout the camp day in accordance with University policy.
  • Support academic activities, projects, and lessons led by instructors.
  • Lead or assist with games, enrichment activities, and transitions.
  • Maintain a positive, inclusive, and safe camp environment.
  • Communicate clearly with camp staff and follow daily schedules.
  • Help with setup, cleanup, and classroom organization.
  • Model professionalism, kindness, and enthusiasm for learning.

Requirements and Qualifcations

  • Experience working with children (camp, classroom, tutoring, childcare, etc.).
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Dependable, organized, and proactive.
  • Ability to manage groups of students and maintain positive behavior. 
  • Interest in education, child development, or related fields preferred.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Compensation 

  • $13.50/hr. 
  • 2 hour paid training required.
  • Opportunities to work multiple sessions.
  • Camps are enrollment driven and may be cancelled with minimal notice. 

 

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
