Job Description - Part Time Faculty - Art and Art History

Part-Time Faculty Position: Gallery Issues and Practices

The Department of Art and Art History at Loyola Marymount University invites applications for a part-time faculty member to teach Gallery Issues and Practices, a 4-unit course focused on curatorial practice, exhibition-making, and gallery administration.

This course introduces students to the history, theory, and professional practice of curating. Students examine historical and contemporary exhibitions, the evolving role of the curator, and key issues in the field, including representation, institutional critique, curatorial ethics, exhibition design, audience engagement, and the artist–gallery relationship. The course combines critical reading, discussion, writing, presentations, field research, and hands-on gallery work.

The instructor will guide students through both theoretical and practical aspects of curatorial work, including exhibition analysis, proposal review, studio visits, artwork selection, installation and de-installation, interpretive writing, press releases, promotional strategies, social media outreach, and exhibition documentation. Students will also contribute to the planning and operation of the Thomas P. Kelly Student Art Gallery and develop skills related to gallery maintenance, programming, community engagement, and future exhibition scheduling.

The ideal candidate should have professional experience in curatorial practice, gallery administration, museum or nonprofit arts programming, exhibition design, or a closely related field. Teaching experience at the college level is preferred. Candidates should be able to connect contemporary curatorial theory with practical exhibition-making and mentor students in collaborative, professional-level projects.

Responsibilities include preparing and teaching class sessions, assigning readings and written work, leading critiques and discussions, supervising student curatorial projects, coordinating hands-on gallery activities, evaluating student work, and maintaining regular communication with students and the department.

Minimum qualifications include an MFA, MA, PhD, or equivalent professional experience in curatorial studies, art history, museum studies, studio art, arts administration, or a related field. Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of contemporary art, exhibition practices, gallery operations, and inclusive approaches to curatorial programming.

Application Materials: Applicants should submit a CV, a brief cover letter describing relevant teaching and professional experience, and, if available, examples of prior curatorial, exhibition, or teaching work.

Materials must be submitted through LMU’s online portal: https://lmu.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/Careers

Please direct questions to department chair, Han Day ([email protected])

Application deadline: June 30.

Minimum salary is $2,657 per unit taught.
