Description

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of part-time Pharmacist. The primary purpose of this position is to deliver expert pharmaceutical care by preparing, dispensing, and verifying medications in accordance with clinicians’ orders. This role provides guidance to clients regarding the safe and appropriate use of prescription and overthecounter medications for their patients and serves as a resource to clinicians and nursing staff on optimal, safe, and effective medication use. The position is also responsible for maintaining accurate medication records, ensuring adequate inventory levels, and monitoring the quality and quantity of all pharmaceuticals. Additionally, this role provides work direction to Pharmacy Technicians and oversees pharmacy operations while on duty. 

The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekends, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position. Further, the successful candidate will be scheduled to work roughly 25 hours during every 2-week period, or 35% FTE. 



Responsibilities

Prepares, dispenses, and verifies medications in accordance with clinicians’ orders, ensuring accuracy and safety in all medicationrelated processes. Reviews dosage calculations and provides evidencebased recommendations to optimize therapeutic outcomes. Supplies pertinent medical and pharmaceutical information to healthcare professionals to enhance clinical practice, support patient care, and contribute to research efforts. Manages billing and credit activities and resolves any associated charging discrepancies to maintain accurate financial and patient records.

Initiates client counseling and provides evidencebased therapeutic recommendations to support optimal patient outcomes. Demonstrates advanced skills in counseling, compounding, and the effective use of reference resources, serving as a role model and contributing to the training and mentoring of pharmacy staff and learners.

Maintains comprehensive records to support controlledsubstance purchasing and monitors all transactions closely to prevent diversion. Procures medications, chemicals, and supplies essential to hospital, laboratory, and research operations. Secures compounding formulas and obtains formulary approval as needed to meet evolving healthsystem requirements.

Maintains the legal good standing of the pharmacy and ensures compliance for all pharmacists and certified pharmacy technicians. Facilitates effective staffing, resolves operational errors, and investigates complaints to support continuous improvement in pharmaceutical services. Implements and upholds policies and procedures designed to consistently achieve the highest standards of service and regulatory compliance.



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited institution and Tennessee pharmacist licensure
  • Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of pharmacology, medication safety, and controlledsubstance regulations applicable to hospital/clinical settings. Experience providing medication verification, counseling, and therapeutic recommendations in a clinical environment.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

Knowledge: Strong understanding of pharmacology, drug interactions, compounding standards, controlledsubstance regulations, and clinical workflows.

Skills: Effective communication and client counseling; skilled in therapeutic decisionmaking, compounding, reference utilization, record-keeping, and pharmacy information systems; strong organizational and mentoring abilities.

Abilities: Ability to maintain legal compliance for pharmacy operations and staff; collaborate effectively with clinicians; resolve errors and complaints professionally; uphold policies and high service standards; and remain composed in urgent or highvolume environments.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Completion of a pharmacy residency program
  • Experience: 1 year of experience as a practicing pharmacist in a hospital, academic, or veterinary medical setting. Experience with sterile and nonsterile compounding, including use of USP standards and reference resources. Familiarity with veterinary pharmacology and speciesspecific medication considerations. Experience training, mentoring, or precepting students or technicians. Proficiency with pharmacy information systems, billing workflows, and electronic medical records. Demonstrated ability to lead process improvement or qualityassurance initiatives.

Compensation: 

  • UT market range: 17
  • Anticipated hiring range: $60+ per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
