Job Description - Part-Time Registered Nurse


Position Summary:

Sparc’s part time Registered Nurse (RN) plays a critical role in ensuring high-quality, person-centered care while promoting independence and well-being for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The PT RN works a flexible schedule while providing skilled and compassionate nursing care to individuals in residential and day program settings. The PT RN's day-to-day activities include conducting health assessments, training staff, and administering medications while ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. In this role, the PT RN will routinely collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, families, and healthcare providers to promote the health, well-being, and safety of the individuals served. Registered Nurse Trainer (RNT) certification or ability to obtain within the first three (3) months of hire required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 


  1. On-Call & Emergency Response: (Essential and Non-Modifiable)


    • Complete on-call shifts, including coverage for non-business hours, weekends, and holidays.

    • Act as a liaison between individuals, families, and healthcare providers.

    • Address health-related concerns promptly and effectively



  2. Staff Training & Support: (Essential and Non-Modifiable)

    • Train and support Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) on medication administration and health monitoring.

    • Ensure DSPs can recognize and respond to signs of illness or distress.

    • Provide ongoing education on healthcare best practices



  3. Health Assessments & Care Planning: (Essential and Non-Modifiable)

    • Administer medications, treatments, and wound care as prescribed.

    • Respond to medical emergencies and provide appropriate interventions.




 


  1. Collaboration & Compliance: (Essential and Non-Modifiable)


    • Work with residential and day program staff to ensure proper health care interventions.

    • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and agency healthcare regulations.

    • Document health data and maintain accurate medical records.

Qualifications:

 

Education & Certification


  • Current and active Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license required.

  • Registered Nurse Trainer (RNT), Basic Life Support (BLS), Insulin Pen, and Enteral Tube certifications required, or ability to obtain within first three (3) months following hire.

  • Current, valid CPR and First Aid certifications are required.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.


 

 

Experience & Skills


  • Minimum of one (1) year of nursing experience (preferably in developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, or community-based care settings).

  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills, including proficiency in electronic health records (EHR).

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and train non-medical staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while functioning effectively in a collaborative and supportive team environment.

  • Previous RN work experience or educational experience working with individuals with disabilities, mental health challenges and/or elderly populations is preferred.


 

Other Requirements


  • Must have a current, valid Illinois Driver’s License and proof of automobile insurance.

  • Must possess reliable transportation for routine travel between work sites.

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including rotating on-call responsibilities.

  • Attend and satisfactorily complete all training requirements and mandatory staff meetings.

  • Experience working in a physically demanding position, including the ability to physically manage any special needs of individuals supported, the ability to transfer and assist individuals with mobility, and the ability to assist program staff in emergencies. Must possess the ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs., the ability to bend, stoop, twist, turn, squat, climb stairs, walk, and stand stationary for intermittent periods of time.

  • Pay Range: $30/hour to $45/hour. Competitive salary will be based on several factors, including relevant experience, skills, specialized training in developmental disabilities, advanced certifications, and education.

Working Conditions:


  • Work is performed in residential group homes, day program facilities, and Sparc’s Administrative offices. 

  • Safety and security procedures for each work site must be followed.

  • Staff in this role may be exposed to moderate noise levels and potential contact with various illnesses and diseases as well as hazardous and toxic chemicals, with some exposure to physically threatening clients, bodily fluids, bloodborne and airborne diseases, viruses, communicable diseases, etc.
