Job Description - Public Safety Officer

$19.81

Compensation will be commensurate with the level of the position, education, and experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Public Safety Officer provides general services and assistance to the MCC Community, to include public safety response, and unlocking and securing of buildings, including classrooms. Responsible for the safety of MCC students, employees, visitors, and property. Responds to incidents such as medical emergencies, natural disasters and accidents. Public Safety Officers may be required to work at various locations area wide.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  • Patrols assigned area on foot, in assigned motor vehicle, or other specialized vehicle to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.

  • Opens and secures classrooms, mechanical rooms, office areas, and limited access areas.

  • Monitors and/or reports unusual or suspicious conditions or incidents. Provides information to the general public, faculty, students, and staff on applicable rules and regulations, office and facility locations, and related issues.

  • Participates in traffic, crowd control, and parking duties.

  • Conducts monthly fire extinguisher inspections at all College owned facilities.

  • Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or ambulance personnel, as required.

  • Responds to safety concerns, medical emergencies, fire and building alarms and inclement weather warnings such as Tornado warnings; assessing the situation; following prescribed instructions; applying basic knowledge of first aid, CPR and other emergency procedures as appropriate; and requesting additional assistance when needed.

  • Prepares detailed incident reports and maintains daily log records by collecting relevant information and accurately completing routine forms.

  • Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information.

  • Consistently and dependably attends work, activities, and functions as scheduled or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations.

  • Knowledge of College policies, rules and regulations.

  • Ability to operate or learn to operate assigned equipment and other security systems such as video surveillance, alarm systems, card access and other related equipment used in day to day operations of the College Police Department.

  • Ability to perform duties without direct supervision.

  • Skill in communicating in a courteous, professional manner and handling conflict effectively.

  • Skill in operating standard office equipment, telephone, copiers and fax machines.

  • Ability to use a computer and basic office equipment.

  • Ability to lift over 30 pounds and to stand for a long period of time.

  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.

  • Ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures and ethnicities.

  • Ability to enforce regulations, reasonably but firmly.

  • Ability to react quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to prepare incident reports and maintain log records accurately and concisely.

  • Ability to work at various college locations area wide.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required.

  • One year of related work experience.

  • Qualified to carry equipment as directed by Police Department policy and in compliance with city, federal and state laws.

  • Current certification or ability to be certified in American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR, AED and First Aid.

  • Valid driver’s license and insurability to drive College vehicles.

  • Must pass a pre-employment background check.
