Join the Dynamic Team at the Thoracic Oncology Research Collaborative Hub (TORCH) led by Dr. Carbone

Position Overview: TORCH is looking to fill the position of a part-time Research Technician 3 in the laboratory of Dr. Carbone.  As the director of the James Thoracic Center, Dr. Carbone has a research lab and mentors multiple PIs.  He also participates in many collaborative research and clinical projects. Together we make up the Thoracic Oncology Research Collaborative Hub (TORCH).  Our group focuses on lung cancer research and translational therapeutics, including immunotherapies.

This position will provide support to senior lab members that support the Carbone lab specifically, working with full-time staff with animal work.  This position is for evening and weekend shifts. There are multiple projects in the Carbone lab and the experimental design may shift and type of treatments can vary.

Training provided:

  • Hands-On Training:
    • As a new employee in TORCH, you will receive hands-on training in essential animal handling and experimental techniques such as drug preparation for animal treatment, oral gavage, body weight measurements, depending on the needs of the project(s) assigned.
    • Once you have received the standard training we will support and provide training required for specific projects to which you are assigned.
  • Compliance and regulatory training:
    • There are regulatory and compliance-based trainings that differ depending on the work being done.  These trainings are required before any work may begin.
      • These can be either computer-based (CBLs) or in-person training.

Requirements:

  • The wet lab/ animal experiments both basic biological and animal handling techniques.
    • Performing and assisting with a variety of molecular biology techniques, including protein/DNA/RNA isolations, Western blots, PCR techniques, bacterial cloning etc. 
    • Monitoring animal health
    • Performing a variety of procedures on mice, including injections, bleeding, oral gavage, weighing, handling, ear tagging, ear punching, euthanasia, etc. 
    • Processing a variety of mouse tissues and blood samples for downstream analysis 
  • Documentation:
    • Records, consolidates, and assists with analysis of research results.
    • Assists in evaluating validity of data obtained from experimental procedures by performing data analysis and other statistical techniques on sample data.
    • Summarizes data for inclusion in grant proposals and manuscripts, assisting with writing and figure generation for manuscripts at the direction of the supervisor. 
    • Prepares research progress reports; assists senior lab members and principal investigator(s) with the preparation of publications, manuscripts, articles, posters, and abstracts.
    • May need to independently review relevant scientific literature to ensure protocols are up to date and to troubleshoot procedures.
  • Lab Maintenance:
    • Assist full-time staff asneeded.

Minimum Required Qualifications - Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, health, or other related science field or equivalent experience required. Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.
  • Previous experience in research or a lab environment with animal handling and experimental treatments required. 
  • Ability to work well within a team environment, while being independent enough to work after normal business hours when full-time staff are available remotely.  

Desired Experience (Preferred but not Required):

  • Self-motivated, and good time management skills 
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication abilities via email, text, etc.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (excel, word etc.)

Commitment and Teamwork:

  • Support experiments, collaborate with fellow students and lab staff, report results, and prepare presentations.
  • A strong willingness to work in a team environment is essential.
