POSITION: Senior Operations Advisor – Part Time

Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, multidisabled, and their families. ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Operations Advisor provides high-level strategic, operational, and institutional guidance to support Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) in expanding mission-driven employment opportunities for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Working under the directional authority of the AIDB President and CFO, this role balances operational efficiency, revenue growth, and organizational development with a deep commitment to employee empowerment and mission advocacy.

 

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business administration or a closely related field.

  • Minimum of five years leading large teams in either the manufacturing or retail industries. 

  • Genuine passion for AIDBs mission and strong dedication to serving those who are blind or visually impaired.

  • Professional Management experience with departmental budgeting processes.

  • Retired State Employee

  • Ability to meet suitability requirements for employment 

 

Performance Responsibilities:

Operational Excellence & Financial Stewardship

  • Multi-Department Advisory: Provide strategic guidance on the day-to-day operations across all core business units, including manufacturing, Base Supply Centers (BSCs), military base contracts, service contracts, and commercial operations.
  • Profitability & Growth Analysis: Plan, monitor, investigate, and analyze overall profitability to ensure long-term financial health, operational sustainability, and expanded opportunities for blind and visually impaired staff.
  • Process Improvement: Apply knowledge of ISO quality standards and LEAN Six Sigma principles to optimize operational processes, reduce waste, and enhance productivity.
  • Special Projects Execution: Assist leadership with high-priority organizational initiatives, specialized training, executive presentations, and strategic meetings.

 

Mission Advancement & Industry Relations

  • Legislative & Stakeholder Representation: Represent AIB/AIDB in legislative arenas, public events, industry forums, and stakeholder meetings as assigned by the President & CFO. 
  • JWOD & NIB Alignment: Utilize expert knowledge of the Javits-Wagner-O'Day (JWOD) Act and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with the National Industries for the Blind (NIB).
  • Strategic Scaling & Revenue Diversification: Identify and execute innovative initiatives to scale the organization, deepen existing customer relationships, and secure new commercial and government business pipelines.
  • Employment Optimization: Offer subject-matter expertise on enhancing services and career advancement pathways specifically designed for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

Organizational Planning & Strategic Leadership

  • Strategic Plan Execution: Assist in the formulation and rollout of strategic plans that balance financial soundness with the expansion of training and job opportunities.
  • Workplace Culture & Talent Empowerment: Foster a supportive, inclusive environment that attracts, retains, and empowers a diverse workforce while prioritizing continuous professional growth.
  • Personnel & HR Consultation: Advise leadership on key human resources practices, personnel matters, and public relations procedures aligned with organizational values.
  • Independent Leadership: Demonstrate the ability to plan, develop, and execute strategic objectives independently while leading and inspiring a diverse team of department managers.

  • Travel Requirements: Occasional regional and national travel required for stakeholder engagement, conferences, legislative advocacy, and operational oversight.
  • Scope of Authority: Serve strictly in an advisory and leadership support capacity. This position is not authorized to execute contracts, make financial commitments, incur expenses, or otherwise legally bind AIDB/AIB unless explicitly authorized in writing by the AIDB President.

 

SALARY:  $50.00 per hour not to exceed 30 hours per week
