Job Description - Controller, Finance

For more than 80 years, Commissionaires Nova Scotia (CNS), a not-for-profit organization, has been providing premiere security services to Nova Scotian companies and organizations throughout the province. Historically known for its social mandate to provide meaningful employment to military and police veterans, CNS now employs more than 1300 trained professionals at over 200 sites across the province. CNS is a leader in providing security services including guarding, threat risk assessments, by-law enforcement, police clearances, federally certified unmanned aerial systems, closed circuit television monitoring, record suspension, and US waiver services. Commissionaires Nova Scotia is also this year's recipient of the Chamber of Commerce 'Not for Profit Company of the Year'.

We have an exciting opportunity as the Controller for our Finance team at Commissionaires Nova Scotia. You'll report directly to the CFO and be responsible for accounting operations of the company. This includes the maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk. The Controller is also responsible for the timeliness and accuracy of the company's reported financial results in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. In addition, the incumbent supports the CFO by proactively serving all departments within CNS to meet their strategic and financial objectives through the provision of regular reporting and cost analysis, as well as special ad hoc reports.

THE ROLE

  • Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Duties and Responsibilities:

Using extremely well-developed professional skills, the key responsibilities will include:

Management

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the accounting team.
  • Management of the overall accounting functions of the accounting team, ensuring the highest possible level of efficiency and accuracy.
  • Maintain/enforce a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Evaluate and improve corporate internal control processes and procedures.

Transactions

  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely/accurate manner
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
  • Process executive payroll in a timely/accurate manner
  • Ensure that monthly bank reconciliations are completed in a timely/accurate manner
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system

Reporting

  • Issue timely and complete financial statements
  • Assist in the production of the annual budget and forecasts
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Manage the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
  • Comply with provincial and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Work collaboratively with other departments within CNS to meet their strategic and financial objectives through the provision of regular reporting and cost analysis

WHO WE'RE SEEKING

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Management/supervisory demonstrable successful experience
  • Impeccable attention to detail and accuracy
  • Adaptable to change and eagerness to learn.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Prioritization and multi-tasking skills
  • Process-driven and results-oriented
  • Accomplished skills in the MS Office 365 suite of products
  • Experience in production of reports, developing and interpreting relevant data in a Sage 300 ERP software suite considered an asset.

Education Requirements (Minimum Requirements):

  • CPA Designation
  • 5+ years' experience leading and managing a finance team in a corporate environment.
  • 5+ years' financial management/Controller experience, or an acceptable equivalent of combined education and experience
