Job Description - Early Childhood Educator Assistant

Position: EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR ASSISTANT

ASSURING THE WELL-BEING AND SAFETY OF ALL CHILDREN IN CARE IS PRIORITY FOR ALL STAFF OF HEADWATERS ACADEMY

Wage: $21.50/hr OR 2 Responsible Adults $19.50/hr (benefits available if full time)

Under the direction and supervision of the centre's Manager and the ECE Staff, Assistants work with ECE's as a team to provide a caring, safe and nurturing environment and age-appropriate programming for children between the ages of 6 weeks-12 years. Through developing and maintaining professional relationships with families and other staff members and close relationships with children they aid in all duties pertaining to the care and well-being of the children in their care. Assistants must be motivated to learn and grow in an educational environment and be willing to continually increase their knowledge, certifications and training in the field of Early Childhood Education.

Direct Childcare Duties:

  • Maintain a positive, calm attitude and a pleasant, soothing voice, modelling this attitude and voice for parents
  • Responding quickly in a soothing and tender manner to children's cries or calls of distress
  • Respecting individual children's preferences and eating styles, participating in meals times to model good manners and healthy nutrition
  • Intervention to ensure that a developmental problem is properly dealt with or that a child is protected from harm in cases of children attending the daycare who display signs of developmental problems or family issues. Taking concerns to lead ECE of the program the child is enrolled in as well as the Director
  • Following all policies and procedures consistently
  • Remaining especially attentive to children during routines such as diaper changing, feeding and changing children's clothing.
  • Respecting individual children's preferences and eating styles, engaging with children at meal times and modelling good manners and nutrition
  • Tending to children's personal hygiene needs
  • Introducing, encouraging and assisting children to practice self-help
  • Providing positive behaviour guidance through redirecting, positive language and positive reinforcement
  • Encouraging children to question and explore the world
  • Integrating children with special needs in the mainstream program
  • Collaborate with ECE's to organize and participate in developmentally appropriate and safe excursions to enhance learning experiences
  • Promote language development through storytelling, drama, music and discussions
  • Teach and model health and safety concepts and social interactions
  • Respect young children's curiosity about each other, ensuring they treat each other gently
  • Following procedures for administering medications, ensuring permission is granted
  • Reporting all accidents, injuries and illness and recording such incidences
  • Monitor the environment, toys and materials for hazards
  • Observe all children for signs of illness, injury, abuse, neglect, emotional disturbances and other special needs and reporting to parents or authorities
  • Collaborate with ECE's on and carry out a daily activity schedule that incorporates child directed activities, care routines and transition times that meet the needs of every child in their care
  • Practising and modelling good personal hygiene, health and hand washing
  • Releasing children to authorized persons only
  • Help each child build their sense of identity and belonging
  • Observe and value each child's way of expressing themselves
  • Assess learning and development

Licensing Compliance Duties:

  • Clear Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Up-to-date Immunizations
  • Personal professional development of 40 hours or more annually
  • Hold a valid License to Practise as an ECE Assistant
  • Knowledge of and commitment to compliance to the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and Childcare Licensing Regulation

Childcare Team Duties:

  • Maintain a cooperative attitude of working together with fellow ECE's
  • Facilitate a team environment through personal behaviour, work contributions and the sharing of expertise and knowledge
  • Participate in the developing of new ideas and methods for program enhancement during team planning sessions
  • Attend all training opportunities
  • Being flexible and willing to compromise
  • Supporting fellow staff in work and personal issues
Program Design Duties:
  • Contribute to designing the program the day care uses in its day-to-day operations
  • Collaborate on developing a schedule of daily activities to entertain, stimulate and educate the children at a level appropriate to their age
  • Evaluate programs regularly
  • Implement a balanced and nutritious healthy food and drink plan
  • Consistent and reasonable plan for dealing with guidance issues
  • Being familiar and up to date on plans for dealing with emergencies
  • Participating in regular safety drills and the review and revision process
  • Following the Early Learning Framework in curriculum planning
  • Be aware of and responsive to children's interests to keep curriculum as emergent and child-led
  • Focus on Holistic Development by incorporating Social, Physical, Intellectual, Creative and Emotional goals
  • Collaborating on the planning and implementing of activities for children with special needs, with training and technical assistance from disabilities and mental health specialists, implementing individual education and care plans, behaviour management plans and/or individualized services or activities as outlined for those children

Facility Duties:

  • Keeping up to date inventory of supplies and equipment, notifying manager when running low
  • Ensuring daily cleaning is conducted and up to standards
  • Regular safety checks of environment (toys, supplies, facility, playgrounds, outdoor areas, indoor areas)
  • Repairing or removing to replace broken or worn out materials, toys, equipment

Community Duties:

  • Contributing to a monthly newsletter from the Centre
  • Brainstorming and implementing ways to integrate children into the community and with citizens
  • Planning and implementing field trips to link children with community

Parental Interaction Duties:

  • Accommodating parent's instructions for daily routines when possible within group routines
  • Maintaining an open, friendly and cooperative relationship with each child and family, always greeting families with a friendly smile and tone, addressing them by preferred names
  • Ensuring all information and release forms are accurate, up to date, signed and securely filed
  • Participating regular meetings with parents and support people regarding child's successes, challenges and progressions in the program
  • Consulting parents/guardians when issues arise to come to the best solution for child, parents and Daycare Centre
  • Act as first-level for parent complaints
  • Teaching and modelling developmentally appropriate practises for parents in caring for their child
  • Encouraging parents to participate and be an active part of the program whenever possible
  • Discussing and informing parents of daily events and their child's progress through face to face meetings, emailed daily reports or phone calls
  • Demonstrate a genuine appreciation and respect for diverse family systems and practices

Safety Compliance Duties:

  • Implementing and following procedures for administering medications, prescription and non-prescription, and maintaining health records
  • Responding to, reporting and recording all accidents, injuries, and illnesses
  • Monitoring the environment for hazards
  • Implementing and following Safe Release for Children procedure, only releasing children to those authorized to pick-up
  • Ensure classroom and play environment is kept sanitary and participating in a cleaning schedule
  • Modelling good hygiene practises, teaching and guiding children in healthful living
