Job Description - Literacy Coach

The Literacy Coach Is Responsible For
  • Support the development of instructional best practices to achieve the MESC Vision and Mission.
  • Coach/mentor staff (school leaders, teachers, and educational assistants) in effective, current and approved instructional, literacy and assessment practices.
  • Collaborate with teachers to identify, recommend and create learning materials and activities to engage students that are contextualized, meet the learning needs of students and align with the MESC values and Alberta Programs of Study.
  • Collaborate with school administrators to ensure best practices and coaching meets the needs of staff and students in the school community.
  • Collaborate with school administrators on effective and meaningful approaches to support teachers on best practices in literacy instruction.
  • Model, seek out and participate in professional learning to ensure competency in leading current and effective practices.
  • Support the implementation of school authority assessments as required (e.g. F&P BAS) and make effective use of data to monitor and evaluate the achievement and attainment of students' literacy by grade.
  • Support the delivery of professional learning for teachers (and non-teaching staff as appropriate).
  • Assist teachers in curriculum and pedagogy through effective use of resources and integration of digital technologies into the learning environment.
  • Provide advice on resources, professional development, assessment and best practice.
  • Provide support and guidance for the literacy lead teachers in each school.
  • Support the school with literacy assessment protocols, data analysis, and goal setting.
  • Observe teachers, provide feedback, model and teach a lesson.
  • Other duties and tasks as required.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to coach/mentor, lead and provide direction in a collaborative team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, solve problems, mediate conflict, and facilitate difficult conversations
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment to ensure culturally relevant instruction and assessment for all students
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to engage in continuing education
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and promote confidentiality
  • Proficiency in use of Fountas and Pinnell Classroom resources
  • Understanding of utilizing assessments to inform instruction
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Education Degree
  • Masters of Education preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years successful classroom teaching experience
  • Extensive experience with Fountas and Pinnell required
Working Conditions
  • Travel required
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
  • Overtime may be required
