About the CFC

The Concordia Food Coalition (CFC) is a non-profit organization and a fee-levy group operating at Concordia University. The CFC brings together students, faculty, staff and community members to co-create campus-community food sovereignty. We collaborate to educate, innovate and incubate vibrant, sustainable, accessible and democratic local food systems. We aim to democratize the campus food system by moving away from corporate models while organizing towards student-led change.

Scope of this Internship

The Concordia Farmers' Market (CFM) provides campus-goers and the surrounding community with a selection of local and organic foods, artisanal crafts, soaps and more. We aim to increase food security within the university’s community, while building relationships with local farmers and producers as well as supporting student initiatives. The Farmers’ Market also partners with farms offering Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscriptions and coordinates weekly CSA pick up events on both Loyola and SGW campuses. 

 

The Farmer’s Market Intern is responsible for organizing and monitoring our weekly markets and related events. The CFM intern will work closely with and learn from our partners. They will build valuable relationships with farmers and vendors who specialize in local food production and sustainable/regenerative practices. The CFM Intern will be responsible for enforcing health and safety regulations, setting and tracking sustainability benchmarks tracking metrics related to waste production, sales, and attendance. This person may also develop outreach and marketing materials, liaise with Hospitality Concordia, and continue working on plans to expand and grow the market. The intern will staff the market and CSA pick up events weekly, on Tuesdays (Loyola) and Wednesdays (SGW) at varying times between 3pm - 8pm. The weekly events will run from June - October.

Specific Responsibilities

    • Organize and monitor weekly market events (Tuesdays at Loyola June - Aug, Wednesdays at SGW Sep - Oct)
  • Monitor weekly CSA pick-ups, as needed (Tuesdays at Loyola June - Aug, Wednesdays at SGW July - Oct - TBC) 
  • Work closely with primary market vendors, liaise and assist in their weekly aggregation needs
  • Host, onboard and assist all vendors in market guidelines and set up
  • Liaise with vendors regarding market updates (eg. weather, locations, parking)
  • Assist in coordination of market product/vendor mix, ensuring a balance between food and artisanal products
  • Work with facilities management to coordinate needed market equipment (tables, chairs, tents, signs)
  • Represent the CFC at the market
  • Maintain a vendor log, including attendance and sustainability metrics
  • Work closely with the CFC team to 
    • Help plan activities
    • Track and report on project related costs
    • Contribute to communications and social media strategy (photos, videos, posts and events)
  • Provide status reports and updates to the CFC team and Board, upon request 
  • Logging work and time 
  • Moving and lifting items and equipment up to 40lbs

General responsibilities

  • Establishing and following through on work plans in collaboration with the team & Board
  • Maintaining timely & compassionate communications and collaborative work relationships with teammates and Board
  • Attending and participating in team and planning meetings (including organizational development, strategic or program planning)
  • Logging work and time
  • Preparing reports for monthly Board Meetings and Annual General Meetings
  • Preparing for and participating in self and peer evaluations (twice annually)
  • Maintaining organization and conformity in collaborative, virtual and physical file sharing
  • Understanding your role and responsibilities as stipulated in this job description
  • Familiarizing yourself with and adhering to the CFC Constitution, policies, history, and general operations 

Qualifications

  • Understanding of the CFC’s vision, mission, values
  • Great communication skills both verbally and written in English and French (to work with partners)
  • Familiarity with Concordia University’s institutional processes and the campus milieu
  • Strong multi-tasking and time-management abilities
  • Ability to support and organize with multiple stakeholders
  • Dedication towards building sustainable, healthy, affordable, and non-corporate food systems
  • Familiarity with web applications like Google Drive, Canva
