Job Description - Software Engineering Manager

Our Company: Neat brings people together with beautifully simple, versatile video devices and experiences. By minimizing the physical and virtual divide, we enable everyone to feel more connected, present and understood, however they prefer to work. We aim to make our technologies so intuitive that terms like "in-office" and "remote" will seem obsolete in five years. Neat's pioneering portfolio addresses the needs of today's workplace and natively supports Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and a range of compelling business apps.

We are an ambitious, accountable, collaborative, responsible, and growing team that fosters an environment where creativity and ingenuity can flourish. We strive to bring out the best in our Neaters and make amazing products and experiences. We are based in Oslo with Neaters working all over the world.

The Opportunity:

We are actively looking for a skilled and ambitious Software Engineering Delivery Manager to lead the growth of our software engineering team and help us streamline and organize our work. While Neat is still a relatively small company, we have grown beyond the naturally self-organizing start-up phase and are beginning to introduce a bit more (not too much!) organizational structure and process to ensure our teams are maximally productive and that we continue to attract and retain the most talented engineers. We are growing our software team, hiring several new engineers in the past two quarters and more planned in the future, and we plan to begin focusing on university recruitment to introduce internships and graduate-level recruitment efforts.

Based at our global headquarters in Oslo, you will join Neat’s main R&D hub of over 70 talented engineers and designers. You’ll be at the forefront of the development and engineering activities for Neat as we drive innovation forward. The role is located ideally in Oslo, but if you can work remotely in the same time zone and have the opportunity to travel to our headquarters when needed you will still be considered.

The Software Engineering Delivery Manager role requires a people-oriented individual with line-management experience who is skilled in the art of software engineering management and feature delivery. You will focus on recruitment, on-boarding, coaching, mentoring, retention, and performance management to grow the team and keep it operating at its best, so that our talented Technical Leads/Area Product Owners can be freed up to focus on product development. You will also focus on software feature delivery, working closely with Neat’s User Experience Designers, Product Managers, Technical Leaders/Area Product Owners, Software Developers and Quality Assurance Engineers, Release Managers and Technical Support leads to streamline the software engineering delivery process. You will work in a fast-paced environment across several software projects in parallel, be trusted with responsibilities, and expected to promote a constructive environment.

What you will do

  • Operate as the line-manager for a team of software developers. Manage recruitment, on-boarding, coaching, mentoring, retention and performance for your team members.

  • Manage operational expenses, capacity planning, facilities (labs, workspace).

  • Work closely with our People team to lead our recruitment efforts, spearheading initiatives such as university recruiting on behalf of the entire engineering team.

  • Organize and lead the software development lifecycle and rituals across the software organization – backlog grooming, scrum mastering, delivery management.

  • Help the team achieve maximum “flow” – ensuring that cross-team dependencies are identified and prioritized so that developers aren’t blocked waiting on one another.

  • Work closely with Product Managers to ensure that all epics and features in Jira are properly defined, with clear acceptance criteria and that all secure development lifecycle (SDL) and compliance requirements are met.

  • Work closely with Technical Leads/Area Product Owners to ensure tasks are broken down and ready to be accepted into the backlog.

  • Track delivery status and communicate it to stakeholders so that leadership is well-informed and accurate roadmaps can be developed and maintained.

  • Organize New Product Introduction (NPI) trainings to ensure that the development team delivers the required information to downstream stakeholders such as Release Management and Technical Support teams, so they can be properly trained and that communications such as release notes and user guides can be accurate and consistent.

  • Ensure that we are at all times meeting all certification requirements set forth by Zoom and Microsoft.

  • Contribute to our achieving ISO 270001 certification.

Who you are

  • A real team player who communicates clearly and effectively.

  • An empathetic and inspiring people leader who inspires the best in people.

  • Detail-oriented and organized, and passionate about helping improve the entire team’s productivity through process-engineering and information-architecture.

  • Self-propelled and takes initiative to lead tasks/projects.

  • Intuition for what our customers, partners and stakeholders need.

  • Hold yourself and your colleagues to a high standard but also know when to be pragmatic.

  • Passionate. We love what we do, you should too.

Your opportunities

  • Make an impact on the world by having your efforts reach and simplify the lives of thousands of customers and millions of users around the world.

  • Make an impact on the organization by leading our software engineering recruitment efforts and the software engineering delivery processes we need to maximize our productivity and results.

  • Make an impact on your team by being the best engineering manager they’ve ever reported to, and to your colleagues by taking the managerial responsibilities so that they can focus on technical/architectural leadership.

  • Broaden your perspective by working at a small but growing company of talented people and proactive people, across a portfolio of products, and across multiple partnerships (Zoom, Microsoft, and several others).

  • Be a part of helping Neat achieve ISO 270001 compliance, and other similar compliance requirements.

  • Have a flexible work-life balance, our job is to create the products and experiences that enable hybrid work.

Required qualifications

  • Relevant education (bachelor or higher) in engineering, science, mathematics, computer science or similar principles or related field, or equivalent years of experience.

  • Hands-on experience in software engineering line management for end-user facing mobile, web, desktop or embedded system applications.

  • Real-world experience with Kanban and/or Scrum methodologies in software engineering.

  • Skilled in recruitment, on-boarding new software developers, coaching, mentoring, and performance management.

  • Proficient in administration of operational expenses and facilities (lab, workspace) management.

  • Can demonstrate end-to-end process-engineering thinking from concept to requirements to specifications to development to delivery.

  • Experience with achieving and maintaining compliancy with industry standards such as ISO 270001 is a plus.

  • Familiarity with software development in the Android ecosystem is a plus, as is knowledge of the video conferencing industry.

  • Fluent in English.

We offer a working environment that is eager to learn new things, driven to build high quality engaging experiences in a highly competitive environment. Cross functional teams and support from highly skilled and caring colleagues that all love what they do, you should too!
