What does a Nurse do?

Nursing service is a component of a larger health-care system that attempts to meet the nursing requirements of patients and the community. The nurses collaborates with members of allied disciplines such as dietetics, medical social service, pharmacy, and others to provide a comprehensive patient care programme at the hospital. Nurses are responsible for taking care of the patients. Their major tasks include creating and maintaining accurate patient records, administering medication and monitoring for side effects, recording vital signs, and reporting symptoms and changes in patient conditions.

Responsibilities of a Nurse

The expected duties to be performed by a Nurse include:
● Assessing the total needs of patients and preparing a plan of care ● Maintaining a record of admission and discharge of patients ● Demonstrating and carrying out efficient care towards patients ● Taking care of personal comfort and toilet of patients, administration of drugs and treatment, observation and recording of vital parameters ● Treating medical emergencies ● Supervising the diet plans of patients ● Making regular rounds of the ward ● Maintaining a proper record of patient’s disease and treatment ● Briefing doctors about the patient’s health condition ● Assisting doctors by giving proper reports during an examination ● Following prescribed rules in case of accident or death of a patient ● Intimating the relatives of the patients about changes in their condition ● Abiding by and working in consonance with the hospital procedures and guidelines ● Exercising utmost care and caution while dealing with patients ● Nurturing a compassionate environment ● Providing psychological support to the patients and their relatives

Requirements of a Nurse

The desirable qualifications for the position of Nurse are:
● 10+2 degree from a recognized board with biology ● Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in nursing ● Prior professional experience in nursing ● Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians and hospital staff ● Experience in assisting doctors in the Emergency Room or intensive care ● Problem-solving skills
