Job Description - Arms Officer

The purpose of Te Tari Pūreke, Firearms Safety Authority business unit is to enable New Zealand to be a world leader in arms safety through an effective regulatory and administrative approach to the Arms Act and Arms Regulations. Established to lead, operate, and develop investment in modernisation of the firearms system, which will result in a more efficient and effective risk-based licensing system, and shall improve public confidence in the firearms licensing system. The modernisation of the Arms Regulatory System will take every opportunity to prevent harm through transparent, high quality, consistent, legislatively correct, and effective regulatory activities. This will also cover world leading administration, education, and promotion of compliance within the provisions of the Arms Act and Arms Regulations. Mō te tūnga | About the role
As an Arms Officer working within the Wellington District Arms Team, you will take every opportunity to prevent harm through the transparent, consistent, timely and efficient regulation of the Arms Act 1983 and Arms Regulations 1992, as well as fulfilling the administration and educational requirements involved in the promotion of regulatory compliance. In this role, your primary responsibility will be the vetting of firearms licence applications, meaning you will be required to travel within your assigned geographical area to visit licence applicants and referees in their homes to assess firearm security and the suitability of the applicant to ensure they meet the required criteria. Your responsibilities will also include more traditional Arms Officer tasks depending on the demand for the range of regulatory services across the district. You will earn trust and confidence by working together in partnership with other policing groups, the firearms community, the wider New Zealand public, and other agencies and organisations to achieve collective impact. Takohanga Matua | Key Accountabilities:

  • Interviewing applicants and referees for firearms licence applications. * Inspecting firearm security in private premises. * Consistent and efficient processing of applications and reporting on security of each licence application. * Inspect or cause to be inspected the records, registers and premises of pistol clubs, dealer premises and collector, prohibited and pistol endorsement holder residence or business to ensure they are meeting their obligations under the Arms Act and Arms Regulations. * Provide Arms Act and Arms Regulation compliance and best practice advice and guidance to members of the firearms community, public and internal customers. * May be required to attend gun shows and auctions to ensure the correct transfer of firearms between licence and endorsement holders using the approved processes. * As required, perform duties to support the District Licensing Office in regulatory functions and/or administration and operational responsibilities of the Arms licensing process.

  • Applicants need to have working rights in New Zealand * Strong interview and report writing skills. * Ability to be a self-starter, work with minimal supervision, and excellent time management skills. * A full driver licence and reliable transport are essential as you will be required to use your personal vehicle for work purposes (costs will be reimbursed). * Competency in the use of an iPhone and laptop (software used includes Microsoft Office 365; Word, Outlook and re-writable pdf forms). * Ability to pass Police background checks. * Ability to understand firearm legislation/regulations. * Experience with firearms is desirable but not essential. * Experience working in a vetting and/or regulatory environment is desirable but not essential.
