Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi | About the Role

Te Ūranga Waka (Ngāti Kahungunu) and Te Whatukura (Te Tairāwhiti) collectively are the School of Māori Studies for EIT and who have delivered te reo programmes in our respective regions for over 30 years.  

With the significant growth in student numbers since 2016, where we have doubled in size and in some instances prior to Covid-19, tripled – the need to have this Poutuara (Assistant Head of School) role is vital. 

The Poutuara will assist the Pouarataki manage and care for our staff, ākonga, their whānau, hapū, our local communities in the eastern regions from Te Wharekāhika to Pōrangahau, all the while ensuring the academic integrity of our programmes is monitored and maintained. Key connections will be the faculty’s Academic Advisor, Teacher Learning Development team, Learning Services, the Marketing team and People, Cultures and Welfare team. 

The appointing salary for this role will be between $76.000 and $95.000, dependent on skills and experience.

The Poutuara, Assistant Head of School is based at our EIT | Te Pūkenga Hawkes Bay campus reporting to the Pouarataki and will be responsible for: 

  • Ensuring the tikanga, aspirations and goals of Te Ūranga Waka, Te Whatukura, Te Ara o Tāwhaki, Te Aho a Māui, our kaimahi, our ākonga, iwi, hapū, whānau, hapori while providing support and guidance to all Programme Coordinators across both kura
  • Supporting staff in setting and achieving performance objectives particularly those related to quality teaching, research outputs and professional development.
  • Marketing of programme.
  • Growing and nurturing stakeholder relationships and partnerships.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of te reo me ōnā tikanga.
  • Minimum post-graduate level qualification in Māori studies, education or a related field, or the equivalent body of knowledge gained through experience.
  • Demonstrate research capability and experience.
  • Experience in te reo Māori tertiary teaching and curriculum development.
  • Demonstrate leadership, organisational and administrational skills
