Job Description - Curator Heritage Facilities Kaiārahi Whare Taonga

  • 32 hours per week, preferably over 5 days
  • Rā Oranga Wellness days + ongoing professional development opportunities.

Nelson is renowned for its extraordinary depth and diversity of arts and heritage activities. We have a great opportunity for an experienced Curator to join our friendly Arts & Heritage team.

In this role, you’ll develop and deliver displays, exhibitions, events and programmes for Broadgreen House and Isel House to enhance visitor experience and embrace the Pou Kōrero of Taonga Tuku Iho Heritage Strategy. You will also ensure that the heritage houses, and associated activities, are well managed and that positive relationships are maintained with volunteers and volunteer groups.

Based mainly at Broadgreen House (as well as Isel House and Founders Heritage Park and occasionally Civic House), you will need to have your own transport to travel between these locations.

To be successful in the role, the preferred skills, experience, and knowledge includes:

  • Experience with managing museum collection items and creating visitor-attracting displays and exhibitions.
  • Experience in creating and enhancing visitor experience and providing quality customer service.
  • Experience in managing museum buildings and associated venue management.
  • Strong organisation, planning and decision-making skills, proven ability to work effectively unsupervised.
  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills, volunteer management experience is desirable
  • Experience in project management, coordinating contractors, and managing budgets.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation relating to the acquisition, documentation and use of collections including Treaty of Waitangi, Museum Aotearoa Code of Ethics, Copyright Act
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in museum studies or similar is desirable
  • Current full drivers’ license
