Job Description - Director, Medical Affairs

Position Summary

Head up development of the clinical roadmap, as supported by company strategy, which outlines scientific and disease state-based milestones, initiatives and portfolio priorities to secure Roche/GenMark’s lead in the space of infectious diseases. Establish relationships with Key Opinion Leaders around the world for ongoing collaborations. Translate dynamic and complex medical and scientific content into actionable information within the company. Successfully work cross-functionally to maximize utilization of scientific and medical content between Scientific Affairs, R&D, Clinical, Marketing and Sales. Develop and lead educational programs across disease states. Build up and promote our brand within the scientific community as a company fundamentally committed to better science for better patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and leverage thought leader relationships by aligning thought leader expertise with Roche/GenMark’s needs as advisors, investigators, or speakers

  • Establish clinical studies and generate publications, white papers, abstracts and presentations to aid product awareness and maximize product positioning; represent the company on key congresses and scientific symposia worldwide

  • Attend scientific and medical meetings both at the National and International level to engage in most up to date discussion and identify thought leaders for potential investigator initiated or Roche/GenMark sponsored studies

  • Conduct peer to peer scientific discussions and data review with potential customers and regional thought leaders

  • Serve as key internal liaison with clinical trial sites participating in trial data generation for FDA submission; participate in review of clinical data for FDA submission of new products

  • Collect and interpret insights in the scientific and medical space; provide feedback on clinical and medical utility, which would be relevant to product portfolio management.

  • Develops and delivers presentation material intended for medical and scientific experts

  • Support Business Development related to disease states assessing opportunities and presenting specific projects that meet disease strategy

  • Prepares summaries and participates in presentations regarding medical and scientific areas for potential company products using data gained in field travel and from thorough literature review

  • Develop and adhere to business plans and leverage skills and resources while maintaining budget and timelines

  • Develop post-market product educational program

  • Cross functional liaison between internal departments; leverage departmental leadership for resources and attention to program needs

  • Assist with special projects as requested and perform additional duties as required

Position Requirements

Education and Experience :

  • M.D. or Ph.D. in Microbiology, Virology, Infectious Diseases or a related Life Science discipline

Skills – Technical

  • At least 5 years of experience in the clinical microbiology and infectious disease space, either within the in vitro diagnostics industry or academia

  • Prior experience in managing or leading a team preferred

  • Capability to influence the organization by demonstrating competence and confidence

  • Interdisciplinary exposure through industry or scientific/academic roles

  • High performer track record with adaptability to fast-paced, rapidly changing environments

Skills – General

  • Must be a hands-on, self-directed, organized and conscientious individual

  • Complete work in a timely, accurate and thorough manner

  • Must be able to think and work both tactically and strategically to provide financial and operational needs to Roche/GenMark’s business

  • Effective analytical problem solving and decision making skills

  • Strong time management and organizational skills in a dynamic, constantly changing environment

  • Strong communication skills including the ability to communicate with all levels within the organization

  • Ability to read, write and analyze complex documents

  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries, customer inquiries or complaints as well as communicate effectively both orally and in writing with management, peers and individuals

  • Ability to work effectively, exhibit a professional manner and establish constructive working relationships

  • Strong problem-solving, judgment and decision making skills are required

Work Environment

The essential functions of the job are usually performed in an environmentally controlled facility where the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position may involve a combination of office and biotechnology laboratory environments. The employee may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens and automated equipment.

While performing the job duties, the employee is regularly required to sit; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee may sometimes be required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
