Job Description - Quantitative Data Analyst

The individual in this position will work alongside Dr. Calista Harbaugh and Dr. Amy Suwanabol within the Department of Surgery, Division of Colorectal Surgery. Drs. Harbaugh and Suwanabol are colorectal surgeons whose research focuses on studying colon and rectal cancer survivorship among patients with early onset disease, optimization of regional cancer care delivery across healthcare systems, and improving end-of-life care to surgical patients. 

The Statistician in this position will perform statistical programming, analysis, and data management of large administrative claims datasets, and provides technical assistance to research teams. The individual in this position will also assist clinicians and other clinical researchers in determining the appropriate analytical methodology to meet their needs, use various statistical packages, and summarizes and interprets statistical results.

The statistician in this position should be comfortable cleaning large datasets and creating cohort files. This position requires management of very large data sets including Medicare, MarketScan, BCBSM, registries and other data sets, and statistical analysis. The Statistician works closely with the research team to:

  • Understand research project and proposal designs and requirements
  • Write, test and implement programs based on the analytic design of the project or proposal using STATA, SAS or R to clean, manage, merge, and analyze data
  • Develop statistical analyses for presentation and discussion with the principal investigator and others
  • Contribute to study reports or manuscripts by preparing tables, graphs and other data displays
  • Create and maintain technical documentation
  • Contribute to the development of methods to evaluate progress of data collection on new projects
  • Participate as a team member in discussions on analysis and improvement of data collection, quality of data analyses, programming and documentation
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum requirements for Senior

  • Bachelor's degree in related field, master's degree strongly preferred
  • Degrees in related field with strong computing and quantitative skills will be considered
  • 3-5 years experience using statistical analysis software (e.g. STATA, SAS, R)
  • Possesses and able to apply a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of health services research to the completion of difficult assignments
  • Must be able to program, manage data, and conduct statistical analysis

Minimum requirements for Intermediate

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Degrees in related field with strong computing and quantitative skills will be considered
  • 1-3 years experience using statistical analysis software (e.g. STATA, SAS, R)
  • Knows and can apply the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of health services research.
  • Must be able to program, manage data, and conduct statistical analysis
  • Master's degree in Statistics, biostatistics, Public Health, or related field
  • Experience with coding in at least two of the following; STATA, SAS or R
  • Experience performing basic regressions and modeling
  • Direct experience in supporting, managing and analyzing major research projects using large administrative data sets such as Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of epidemiologic concepts and methodology
  • Strong programming knowledge using a high level programming language
  • Experience with database management and complex data structures and linkages between data sources including understanding medical procedure codes
  • Ability to draft statistical tests in accordance with project designs and to solve analytic problems, including descriptive statistics, linear regression, logistic regression, survival analysis, mixed models with repeated measures, multi-level modeling, and conjoint analysis
  • Ability to independently develop instruments and related analysis plans
  • Experience with multicriteria decision analysis is a plus

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

This position will offer a flexible work schedule by offering both in-person and remote opportunities. The administrative work is primarily work from home. However, the team strives to be in the office 2 days per week, which may need to be flexible due to study demands and faculty availability.

When onsite, this there will be a dedicated office space among the research team at the North Campus Research Complex.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
