Job Description - REGISTERED NURSE/ FLIGHT NURSE SPECIALIST

Michigan Medicine, regionally and nationally known for its commitment to providing high quality, family-centered patient care, seeks high functioning, experienced critical care / emergency nurses for our Survival Flight Program. Survival Flight transports complicated ICU and Emergency patients to advanced levels of care, implementing evidence-based practice interventions. The purpose of the Survival Flight Initial Training Curriculum is to prepare the proficient emergency / critical care nurse for clinical practice as a Survival Flight Nurse at Michigan Medicine. This program is intended to transform a practicing skilled and experienced critical care bedside nurse into a transport nurse that meets and exceeds the practice standards of Survival Flight and Michigan Medicine. This is a rigorous and extensive orientation which requires personal motivation and dedication as a self-directed learner. 

Training and education of the Survival Flight Nurse will include but is not limited to the 10 Core Training Modules: Introduction to the Transport Environment, Safety and Operations, Basic and Advanced Airway Management, Emergency and Trauma Care, Ventilator Management of the Critically Ill Child and Adult, Pediatric Critical Care, Neonatal Critical Care, High Risk Obstetrics and Introductory Radiology and Diagnostics. Clinical education will also include Survival Flight Third-rider experience, focused-ICU, or other ICU patient care areas (based on employee needs), Clinical Skills Lab, and scenarios, discussion forums, and Competency-Based Education. The entry-level flight nurse will be required to obtain Paramedic training and Michigan Licensure during the initial training period, and no later than 12 months following orientation start date. 

The Initial Training Period will be between 9 and 12 months, depending on specific needs and progress. This individual will be considered a Survival Flight employee for the duration of their training. Shift assignment will occur after successful completion of the initial training. Successful completion of the orientation requires meeting the behavior of the Professional Framework (RSAM) for a Flight Nurse at the Competent Level. IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING START DATE: The onboarding/orientation for this position will start in June of 2024. Specific start date to be determined by the department.

The basic function and responsibility of the Survival Flight Nurse is to provide care, treatment, and appropriate life support and/or stabilization of chronically or acutely ill and/or injured patients across the lifespan. The nurse collaborates with other health team members and associated resource persons to provide continuity in patient care. The nurse participates with health team members for problem solving in area management.

These patients require care at regional referral and / or ACS designated level I or II Trauma Centers. The flight nurse collaborates with other health team members and associated resource persons to problem solve, implement treatment modalities and interventions to maximize patient outcomes. For these reasons it is vital that Survival Flight nurses are committed to safe operations, premier customer service and clinical practice, and leadership in education.

Current licensure to practice as a RN in the State of Michigan

A MINIMUM of four (4) years of RN experience in two (2) of the following three (3) areas:  

1)  Adult ICU

2) Pediatric ICU (does not include Neonatal ICU experience)

3) Emergency Department (ED) Note: For candidates with 3-4+ years of ICU nursing experience, Paramedic field experience may be considered for ED requirement if the candidate has practiced as a senior paramedic in a busy 911 system. 

Current Michigan Paramedic Licensure -OR- currently enrolled in a paramedic program (must be completed within 12 months of orientation start date). 

Current BCLS and either current ACLS or PALS certification

CCRN certification  **CFRN and CCRN are both required to be completed within 24 months of hire**

Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills and autonomous practice as evidenced by successful completion of selective testing tools in areas of advanced practice nursing, including hemodynamically unstable patients, critically ill pediatric patients, patients with airway or respiratory compromise, acute trauma, multi organ system failure patients, etc. **Testing will be required as part of the interview process**

Demonstrated Commitment to Professional Practice and Development, to include: 

1) Leadership experience as evidenced by peer review and annual evaluation (e.g., charge nurse role, committee leadership, project lead, and/or preceptor experience)

2) Problem solving skills and independent decision making in working with peers, residents and/or attending physicians within, and outside institutional boundaries.                       **specific examples and references are required**

3) Outstanding interpersonal skills as evidenced by peer feedback from others, annual evaluations and during the interview process

Favorable evaluation by supervisor within one (1) year of application submission

NOTE: In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • BSN preferred
  • Pediatric ICU or ED RN experience at a Level 1 or 2 trauma Center or regional/tertiary care center (NOT including Neonatal ICU)
  • Adult ICU or ED Experience at a Level 1 or 2 trauma Center or regional/tertiary care center
  • Paramedic License in the State of Michigan (Active) with road field experience
  • Committee or Unit Involvement; publishing in peer-reviewed journals, teaching/instruction, research, or project involvement (see above requirement for demonstrated commitment to professional practice)
  • Nursing Certifications in current specialty
  • ECMO, Cardiac Assist Devices, or advanced ventilation technique experience
  • Provider Training Courses (ACLS, PALS, NRP, ABLS, ATCN, TPATC)

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework, Role Specific Advancement Model.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework Role Specific Advancement Model levels are Competent NE, Expert NE, and Mastery NE. Hours: 40 hours per week
Shift Information: 12hr shifts, Nights. **Must be flexible with hours as shift assignments during orientation may be variable for optimal learning.
