Company Description

The BCCC is an independent body that monitors compliance with the Banking Code of Practice (the Code).

The BCCC is made up of an independent Chair, a banking industry representative and a consumer representative. The role of the BCCC is to monitor Code compliance and promote best practice Code implementation to improve standards of service in the Australian banking industry – ultimately helping banks to create a better banking experience for customers.

To improve banks’ code compliance the BCCC:

  • examines bank's practices
  • identifies and prioritises industry wide, serious and systemic issues
  • recommends improvements to bank practices
  • sanctions banks for serious compliance failures, and

The BCCC’s day-to-day work is supported by a secretariat at the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA). The secretariat provides operational and administrative support under a service agreement between the Australian Banking Association (ABA) and AFCA. This agreement, along with the BCCC Charter protects the independence of the BCCC’s governance, processes and decision-making.
