Our Australian region, boasts a fleet of over 30 vessels across multiple ports along the East Coast, with a significant presence in PNG.  We pride ourselves on our safety culture, work ethic and commitment to the environment.  We are seeking applications from enthusiastic and dedicated First Nations Peoples who are interested in exploring a rewarding career in the maritime industry.

This Indigenous Traineeship is an opportunity for motivated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates to develop the skills required to  have a successful career within the maritime industry. As a Trainee, over a 12 month period  you will complete a Certificate II in Maritime Operations  (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal), leading to potential long term employment within the company and/or, further studies and qualifications. 

Job Description

Study Requirements:

Throughout the 12-month trainee program, you will complete a Certificate II in Maritime Operations  (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) through a combination of formal training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and practical on the job experience 

Traineeship Outcome:

Subject to assessment and sea-time requirements by AMSA, this qualification will allow you to work as a GPH (General Purpose Hand/Deckhand).  This is an entry level qualification, additional qualifications would be required if you would like to command a vessel or work your way up to Ship Master.

What you will learn:

  • Practical skills in coastal navigation, using a range of vessels.
  • Practical firefighting and survival skills required for safety at sea.
  • Practical mechanical and engineering skills for a range of vessels.
  • Health, safety and environmental work practices aboard a vessel

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity you must:

  • Have completed grade 10 or above
  • Be a  Mackay local or a local of the region Mackay 
  • Enjoy practical, hands on, outdoor work
  • Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and be able to provide a certificate of Aboriginality.
  • Have a genuine interest in the maritime industry, a  willingness to learn and a positive attitude 
  • Be committed to completing a recognised qualification through the traineeship
  • Be able to undertake a pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol testing.
  • Having a valid Australian Drivers License or on the way to achieving one an advantage
