The Opportunity

Contract: 6 months, with potential for extension

Location: Melbourne, Hybrid

We’re seeking a Systems Monitoring Engineer (Zabbix) to operate and enhance our client’s Zabbix‑based monitoring platform. This role focuses on improving visibility, reliability, and alert quality across Linux systems and network infrastructure.

This role is well suited to someone early in their career who has a strong technical foundation, enjoys working with Linux and networks, and is keen to learn how monitoring supports reliable IT systems.

You will work with more experienced engineers to configure monitoring checks, dashboards, and alerts, investigate issues raised by monitoring, and gradually build a strong understanding of our client’s systems and environment.

What You’ll Do

• Operate, maintain, and enhance the Zabbix monitoring platform.


• Configure and tune monitoring checks, triggers, dashboards, and alerts for Linux servers and network devices.


• Investigate alerts, incidents, and performance trends to identify root causes and support resolution.


• Work with infrastructure, network, and systems teams to address issues and improve monitoring coverage.


• Improve alert quality by reducing noise and ensuring alerts are meaningful and actionable.


• Expand monitoring for new and existing systems and services as environments evolve.


• Document monitoring standards, procedures, and improvements to support shared understanding.


• Contribute to ongoing improvements in system reliability and observability.

What You’ll Bring

• Hands‑on experience with IT monitoring tools, ideally Zabbix.


• A strong understanding of monitoring metrics for:


• Linux/Unix systems (CPU, memory, disk, processes, services)


• Network devices (latency, throughput, packet loss, interface health)


• Solid Linux administration skills.


• Working knowledge of IP networking concepts.


• Ability to investigate and troubleshoot technical issues across systems and networks.


• An organised and self‑directed approach to learning and working within complex environments.


• The ability to collaborate effectively within teams with diverse skill sets and experience levels.
