About the role
Reporting to the Regional Manager Albany, the Operations Superintendent will be responsible for the safe and effective execution of the operations for Southern Ports Albany.


The Operations Superintendent will be responsible for ensuring the safe and effective planning and execution of berth and cargo operational functions across the Port of Albany. The principal duties include berth vessel planning and scheduling activities, coordination and monitoring of vessel loading/discharging operations, issues resolution and problem solving as well as stakeholder engagement, acting as a key communication point for port users, agents, stevedores, and other service providers to ensure efficient and streamlined activities across the terminal.


Other key requirements of the role include, stakeholder engagement, port user relations and the identification and implementation of logistic and terminal improvements with a data driven and evidence-based approach.


The role will directly manage the operational performance of the Port and be responsible for the development, tracking and reporting of key operational performance metrics.



Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure all health and safety policies, principles and procedures are adhered to and communicated
  • Ensure the accurate reporting, investigation, and implementation of corrective actions for all health and safety incidents, near misses and hazards
  • Development and implementation of procedures, policies, and work instructions relevant to terminal and logistics operations
  • Ensure that relevant OHS legislation is complied with
  • Oversee terminal efficiency for all port stakeholders by using available data
  • Support terminal operating system
  • Identify opportunities to deliver optimum trade facilitation
  • Engage professionally with customer and contractor group
  • Lead and promote a culture of continuous improvement at all levels
  • Provide support to Regional Manager during operational need
  • Establish formal and informal relationships with customers, relevant agencies and authorities, shipping agents and port stakeholders
  • Liaise and collaborate effectively with other managers in SPA to ensure a coordinated approach is taken to service delivery across the Port
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with Port users, the community, stevedores, and other key stakeholders
  • Liaise with customers and other port users within the scope of the role
  • Set up and run regular contractor & stakeholder meetings
  • Develop, update, monitor and action operational KPI’s related to terminal performance
  • Provide clear and frequent direction to all port stakeholders
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Invoicing of Equipment Hire and Labour to Port Users
  • Invoicing for Fertiliser Hopper Washdowns
  • Providing Water to Vessels
  • Meter reading of power and water meters
  • Coordinating receival of deliveries of various non-maintenance related goods and equipment
  • Out of Hours – Phone Calls & Landside Emergency First Responders
  • Coordination and setup for Navy Visits
  • Coordination and setup for Cruise Ship visits (toilets, barriers, fencing, VMB, Flags, beautification plants)
  • Coordination with fuel providers and vessels / port users for bunkering
  • Setup of fencing and security areas for use by Port Users (Navy Visits, Cruise Ships, Port Open Days, etc)
  • Management of the Quarantine Biosecurity Waste Bins and removal
  • Permits to Work for Port Users (Fertiliser Vessel Grabs Load/Unload, Divers for Grange/BMT AWAC maintenance, etc
  • Post Loading and Discharge inspections of wharf for accepting cleanliness
  • Fumigation Permits
  • Crane Permits
  • Vessel Positioning on Berths
  • Dial Before You Dig Request responses
  • Berth 2 Shiploader Grillage setup and pack down, including supervision.
  • Managing the Cleaning Contractors (x3)
Experience and Requirements

  • Tertiary qualification or relevant tertiary qualification in logistics
  • Business Management qualifications
  • Accredited Front Line Leadership training
  • Current WA Drivers Licence
  • Shipping, cargo logistics, chartering and supply chain industry experience
  • Experience in change management, continuous improvement, team building and successful negotiation
  • Port Operations experience
  • Shipping and cargo logistics industry experience
  • Good commercial acumen
  • Knowledge of performance management techniques
  • Knowledge of project management principles
  • Knowledge of legislation, standards and policies applying to the shipping industry
  • Knowledge of best practice technology and techniques to improve quality and productivity
  • High level of computer proficiency
  • High level of literacy and numeracy
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent people management skills
  • Flexibility and adaptable to the needs of the business
  • Must be able to work with a vast range of contractors and customers
  • Preparation of reports and the ability to provide presentations
  • Proactive in Health, Safety and environment initiatives and continuous improvement

Requirements


To be eligible for this permanent role, applicants must provide proof of Australian citizenship or permanent residency.


The successful applicant must have a current WA driver’s licence, be able to obtain and maintain a Maritime Security Access Card and undergo a pre-employment medical assessment including drug and alcohol testing.
