About the role:

A fixed term Supervising Lawyer role has arisen in the Administrative Law and Privacy Legal Unit for an experienced lawyer.

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain valuable experience supervising legal staff within Victoria Police.  The Administrative Law and Privacy Unit lawyers work on a range of complex matters and are based within the Civil Law Division of the Legal Services Department of Victoria Police.

Victoria Police's Legal Services Department is enhancing its advocacy response in an effort to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria. Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated advocates to prosecute a range of civil applications, primarily review applications in respect of firearms applications, Firearms Prohibition Orders, private security applications and FOI requests and Privacy Complaints in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Firearms Appeals Committee as well associated applications in other jurisdictions. As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to supervise a team to ensure the team are managing numerous files across a range of jurisdictions, busy court lists and competing priorities effectively whilst coaching, mentoring and developing junior lawyers.

The role offers an opportunity to tailor your skill to an array of matters that vary in complexity. You will be expected to perform caseload management and offer legal advice to all stakeholders. You will also be required to develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the expansive Victoria Police workforce as well as working with external stakeholders across agencies as part of a broad network to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.

Your duties will include:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (unrestricted practising certificate);
  • High level understanding and experience as a court advocate;
  • Ability to supervise a team, in a developing and emerging work environment;
  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence;
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring and developing junior Lawyers to undertake high-level advocacy work;
  • A formal management qualification and formal teaching or training qualification would be advantageous;
  • A current and valid Drivers' Licence is highly desirable.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x full-time fixed term position until 30/06/2024
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • In accordance with organisational policy, all Victoria Police employees are required to be fully vaccinated (including a booster vaccination) against COVID-19 or hold a valid medical exception. As such your employment with Victoria Police is subject to providing evidence of your vaccination status.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department. This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
