Job Description - Program Manager

About Us

Music in Exile is a not-for-profit record label and registered Australian charity supporting musicians with lived experience of migration and displacement working in the Australian music industry.

Since 2019, we have supported artists to write, record, release and tour original music, developing creative and professional networks for artists and creating real opportunities for a career in the arts.

We operate on the principle of ‘artist first’, allowing artists to guide the process and ensuring that our work at all times responds to individual artists’ personal and professional goals.

In undertaking this work, we hope to contribute to an Australian music industry that is accessible for all and that more accurately represents the many voices of our community.

The Role

The Music in Exile (MIE) Artist Accelerator Program (AAP) aims to provide education, skills and training to empower culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) musicians to realise their potential as a valued, celebrated part of the Australian music industry.

The Australia Council for the Arts’ report, ‘Towards Equity: A research overview of diversity in Australia’s arts and cultural sector ’ found that although CALD Australians are core to arts and culture, “culturally and linguistically diverse Australians are still often unable to access or shape its resources and decision-making” .

Further, it reported that CALD artists across Australia indicated “feeling excluded from cultural venues and organisations, educational institutions, government, and funding bodies…hindering career development, prevent[ing] stories from being told and creating barriers between artists and audiences.”

Working with feedback from artists and industry professionals, we have designed an Artist Accelerator Program that seeks to offer artists an opportunity to retain ownership over the resources, networks and skills that they need to build a career in the arts. With the support of our Program Manager, artists will partake in a 23 week program that provides opportunities in creative collaboration, songwriting, recording, brand development, marketing strategy, music distribution and live performance.

Over the course of one year, it is expected that you will support 3 x artists through this pilot program, documenting their progress, receiving feedback and reporting on program outcomes upon completion. You will also be invited to contribute to the development of future programs.
