Job Description - Social Worker

About the Role:

The Social Worker is responsible for the provision of counselling, casework, and advocacy services for Biripi ACMC patients, clients and their families and carers across various departments.

The key objectives of the role include:

  • Managing the provision of social work services to the Aboriginal community within the National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Mental Health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing.
  • Providing appropriate assessment and intervention to improve the health and wellbeing of the person taking into consideration their family and kinship, spiritual wellbeing, community, culture, country and ancestors.
  • Assisting with health promotion and education activities to ensure the effective promotion of health and wellbeing in the Aboriginal community.
  • Deliver culturally safe, appropriate, and quality social work service to the Aboriginal community ensuring organisational objectives and standards of care are met. Ensure the service is delivered with consideration to the National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Mental Health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing.
  • Strengthen social and emotional wellbeing by providing collaborative, holistic, and integrated care within the specialist Biripi teams of Domestic and Family Violence, Alcohol & other Drugs, Child, Youth & Family, and other interventions such as counselling, healing activities and/or other social and emotional wellbeing supports to the Biripi community.
  • Ensure that service delivery is accessible, responsive, and safe for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and that cultural values, strengths and differences are recognised and incorporated into the governance, management, and delivery of supports and services.
  • Provide a social work service that includes assessment, crisis/supportive counselling, therapeutic brief intervention, case management, consultation and referral as required.
  • Contribute to the work of a multi-disciplinary team to meet the goals of the Social, Emotional and Wellbeing program. This involves proactive screening and identification of risk to ensure these clients are prioritised.
  • Undertake assessment of clients, determine needs and interventions required and develop an intervention plan with the person.
  • Evaluate client progress and outcomes of interventions to maximise outcomes for clients and optimising use of resources.
  • Work collaboratively with the Social & Emotional Wellbeing and Health Services Teams to provide advice, consultation and arrange referrals to other services where needed.
  • Prioritise caseload requirements to provide an optimal social work service to the Aboriginal community.
  • Participate in the development of health and wellbeing promotions and educational strategies ensuring feedback from the community is incorporated into planning.
  • Communicate with clients, patients and their families and carers ensuring they have appropriate support and information to make informed decisions.
  • Assist clients to develop formal and informal networks to advocate on their own behalf with community groups and government agencies.
  • Develop partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure holistic education, promotion, and communication of issues facing Aboriginal communities.

Essential Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work (Preferred), Mental Health and Aboriginal Primary Health Care Practice qualifications will be considered.
  • Experience working with clients that are affected by issues including neglect, child abuse, domestic violence, mental health, social & emotional wellbeing, and substance abuse.
  • Significant experience providing culturally appropriate and effective social work services in and Aboriginal Community setting.
  • Sound knowledge in the areas of community mental health, public health and Aboriginal health.
  • Confirmation of Aboriginality (Preferred but not essential.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities, suicide prevention, mental health, drug & alcohol, domestic violence, social and emotional wellbeing, child and family intervention.
  • Demonstration of continuously developing professional competencies and qualifications.
  • High level of computer literacy; sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with all levels of the organisation and the local community.
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills.
  • Current valid Driver’s Licence.
  • Ability to hold a National Police Check and Working with Children Check Clearance.
