The Opportunity

Come and discover the opportunity to join our Slabmaking Technology team at our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility as a  Technology and Development Engineer . As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

The Slabmaking process is an integral part of our manufacturing operations, you will be responsible for optimising and improving the steelmaking and slab casting process, ensuring customer needs are met and maximising profitability. Focused on your professional growth, you’ll build a detailed metallurgical knowledge of the steelmaking process including primary and secondary steelmaking processes that convert liquid iron from the blast furnace to steel and the slab casting process that converts the liquid steel to solid steel slabs . Supporting operations, you will apply this knowledge to recommend and implement improvements.

What Will You Do?

With your analytical, hands-on approach and a keen interest to grow and develop yourself technically, you will:

  • successfully contribute to a safe working environment, ensuring safety standards are never compromised
  • identify, coordinate and deliver cost effective improvement projects and outcomes in the production of slabs
  • provide technical support, operational data analysis for the day-to-day operations
  • coach, develop and liaise with both internal and external resources to enhance capabilities and resolve operational issues as they arise
  • become a recognised technical/ metallurgical expert on steelmaking quality & production.

More About You

As a self-motivated individual, you will be a confident communicator who is able to influence outcomes at different levels across the business. With an eagerness to learn, you’ll be comfortable working with systems and bring:

  • relevant tertiary

    qualifications

    in Engineering or Science (Materials / Chemical / Process)
  • a technical acumen with the ability to translate technical information into value-add business outcomes
  • a willingness to learn and develop your skills with a continuous drive in improving procedures and process
  • an understanding that you will be working in areas with high temperatures

Experience and qualification in the following would be highly regarded:

  • experience and understanding in the technical aspects of a continuous industrial process involving Steelmaking and/or continuous casting systems.
  • a penchant or an interest to apply modern process control, machine learning and/or automation solutions to the steelmaking process.
