Job Description - Animal Facility Supervisor (Breeding)

About This Opportunity  

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced professional to step into the role of Supervisor, Animal Facility (Breeding) at the University of Queensland!

This role provides leadership across animal husbandry, complex breeding programs, and specialised research procedures within a regulated laboratory environment. Reporting to the Animal Facility Manager, the position oversees colony management, surgical and technical services, staff capability, and compliance with Animal Ethics, OGTR, Biosecurity and WHS requirements.

This is a key leadership role for a technically strong professional seeking to influence operational excellence, strengthen compliance culture, and support high-quality research outcomes.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Lead and manage daily animal care, complex breeding programs, and advanced procedural services across the facility.

  • Oversee staff, including training, mentoring, performance management, and workload allocation.

  • Ensure compliance with Animal Ethics, OGTR, Biosecurity, WHS, and other regulatory standards.

  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures, training materials, and continuous improvement initiatives.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position until July 2026 at HEW Level 7. 

About You

  • Extensive experience in laboratory animal management, including complex colony and breeding program oversight.

  • Strong leadership and mentoring capability, with a commitment to developing staff and student expertise.

  • Skilled in advanced animal procedures, surgical techniques, and welfare-compliant handling.

  • Excellent knowledge of regulatory requirements, including Animal Ethics, Biosecurity, and WHS standards.

  • Highly organised with strong problem-solving, decision-making, and operational management skills.

  • Effective communicator, able to collaborate with researchers, staff, and external stakeholders.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including right to work in Australia, criminal check, and medical clearance.

You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.
