Job Description - Assay Hub Lead

An excellent opportunity is available for an Assay Hub Lead to join the Snow Centre for Immune Health at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position
The Snow Centre for Immune Health (SCIH) has a global mission to improve the lives of people with immune diseases, using a new approach to immune health. The centre, co-led by WEHI and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, brings together leading Australian and international researchers with a shared mission to transform how we research and treat the immune system. Our goal is to accelerate discoveries into the underlying features and markers of immune health, to identify disease causes early and target appropriate treatment. The Centre has been established in partnership with the Snow Medical Research Foundation.

We are seeking a senior leader to provide the strategic direction, technical oversight and operational leadership necessary to transform research-grade immunological assays into a high-throughput data engine. Reporting to the Director of the Snow Centre for Immune Health and working closely with the Centre’s research programs, the incumbent will establish a scalable operating model for the Assay Hub, fostering a culture of operational excellence and rigorous precision. The role leads a multidisciplinary team to deliver reproducible, quality-controlled datasets for SCIH programs and, where agreed, external partners under a defined service model. The role sets the technical and operational standards for assay transfer, automation, documentation, quality systems, and delivery performance.

The role will oversee the day-to-day operations of the hub, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, reproducible datasets that are critical to the Centre’s success.

Selection Criteria
Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent higher degree in Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related life sciences discipline.

  • Formal certification in laboratory management or quality management (desirable).

  • Certification in project management (desirable).

Knowledge and skills:

  • Proven track record of managing large-scale laboratory operations, specifically migrating assays from manual bench-top protocols to automated platforms.

  • Expert-level knowledge of automated liquid handlers and high-content analytical platforms.

  • Solid understanding of GCLP or ISO standards.

  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams, with a focus on resource allocation and workflow optimisation.

  • Experience supporting both internal and external partnerships in a service delivery model, including scope, timelines, and reporting.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage knowledge transfer, specifically the ability to translate complex biological concepts into rigid, scalable SOPs.

  • Competency in managing budgets.

  • Experience utilising LIMS for sample tracking and data integration (desirable).

Personal qualities:

  • A commitment to quality and detail.

  • The ability to push back firmly yet diplomatically where necessary.

  • The resilience to troubleshoot complex mechanical or biological failures under tight data-delivery deadlines.
