Job Description - Assistant Project Manager

Why getting what we ask for might not be what we think!

Why getting what we ask for might not be what we think!

Many of my clients are finding the current times difficult to comprehend and even more difficult to navigate. They have been affirming and praying for more flow in their lives, more flexibility, more opportunity but they are held back by the rigid structures they wish to see that flow in.

Here's a common scenario.

My client feels stuck in their job. They don't like it, the people or the income it gives. They want to change it all.

BUT... They've only imagined a better version of what they already have. In other words they want a better position, more money, a great team and boss to work with but they don't want the uncertainty, insecurity and instability that the changes might create. This is because most people don't know:

You will have to change yourself before you get what you want.
Melody R. Green - Soul Careers |Soul Coach

Your mindset is crucial to how you achieve the goals you set out.

Here's another scenario...

The company management team know they need to have more innovation to survive as well as the people to drive that innovation but the job descriptions for the new people look much the same as the old ones but with the word innovative included... and then they are surprised that the new people are not getting the changes they anticipate OR by some miracle they do get an innovator, theydon't like the disruption such a person brings to the managment and staff!

Again it is a matter of mindset and willingness to be uncertain, insecure and unstable for a period of time until the organisation can grow into the new model and restabilise itself.

So in today's climate when everything is changing at such a fast pace that what you know today could become redundant by the end of next month - how good are you at moving with the changes?

What do you need to master in order to be in demand rather than be a dinosaur?

Here are 12 skills not necessarily inpriority but all are important.

1) Adaptability - your ability to change mid-stream because the circumstances have changed is crucial.

2) Flexibility -there is no place for rigid thinking or an insistence on following procedures to the exclusion of the circumstances.

3) Fluent communication skills - you'll need to understand and be able to work with difficult people with ease. Personality clashes will need to be put aside in order to focus on the project. Issues of bullying, or an inability to be a team player will stop you getting continued work.

4) Technological prowess - If technology is your weakness, you'll need to get extra help in order to keep up with the continuous changes. Companies and staff will become obsolete and be unemployable without current tech skills.

5) Big Pictureunderstanding and Small Picture implementation - you'll need to understand where your work fits into the company's big picture AND be able to implement those ideas in the space of your job (small picture). Without this skill you won’t be able to adapt or alter the implementation to save time and money quickly enough.

6) Networks that can support your strengths by backfillingyour weaknesses. Know what others in your company or (circle of support companies) do so that you can call on them to help fill in the gaps of your expertise. Collaboration and getting the project working as quickly as possible is more important than your individual pride and need to be the sole owner of the project.

7) Awareness of your skills, talents and attributes and how to use them tosolve the company's problems. You need to be able to know what your STA's are and how to use them properly for the benefit of the organisation. It's your responsibility to know what skills you are using and why. You may need to negotiate your part in the project based on these skills as management look for the best people in their company to do the project. Selling yourself at the interview and then never doing that again is no longer enough. You will need to show what you are bringing to each project. This is not about blowing your own trumpet, it's about letting management know you have an understanding of the project and know what skills are needed to make it happen.

8) Enhanced productivity - speed and sureness when implementing tasks. You need to be working at using your skills, talents and attributes efficiently and appropriately. Keeping open and taking action pre-emptively to avoid mistakes or time wasting.

9) Project Management skills - you might think you have a job that's secure and permanent, but company's these days are working project to project. Therefore, you need to treat your work as a part of a project that has a beginning and end date. You could of course be running more than 1 project at a time and your capacity to do that will be highly regarded.* If you are working in jobs that don't have projects think in terms of sales promotions, seasons or monthly goals.

10) Stress Management and Self Care - you will be expected to know how to manage your own stress levels so you can work to capacity in peak periods.

11) StrongBoundaries - People pleasers take note - knowing when to take responsibility and when to say no is crucial in this working environment.

12) A sense of humour - Yes! No matter where you are, you still need one of these - in fact you may be more in need of this than ever before. It should be part of your Self Care First Aid Kit!

So how many of these skills do you have?
