Life at Mission Australia

When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we advocate for a fairer Australia, to meet the growing needs of people across the country. Together we’re building hope and possibility for all.

Find out more about us and our purpose.

Your Opportunity

This role is part of our Integrated Homelessness Supported Accommodation Program (IHSAP), known locally as “Batten Road,” which supports people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness through a collaborative, wraparound model.

This is an on-site position based in Garramilla Darwin, working directly with individuals and families to provide case management support. That includes helping clients access services like mental health, AOD, family support and domestic violence support, so they can work through challenges and move towards stable housing.

The role is very person-centred, building relationships with clients, provide informal counselling, support life skills development, and help them navigate often complex systems. It requires initiative, sound judgement, and the ability to work under general supervision on tasks of a complex or specialist nature. You may also provide some guidance to other team members.

Ultimately, the goal is to support people to secure and sustain long-term housing and improve their overall life outcomes.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop tailored case management plans addressing both immediate and long-term client needs using a strengths-based, person-centred approach.
  • Conduct risk reviews, create safety plans, and support clients through referrals to specialist services including housing, AOD, and mental health.
  • Assist clients in the transition to independence, supporting them with tenancy preparation, housing applications, and sustaining long-term accommodation.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including case notes, reports, and data entry, ensuring compliance with Mission Australia’s case management standards.
  • Build strong working relationships with clients, Indigenous communities, government and non-government agencies, and other co-located service providers.
  • Facilitate or contribute to engagement activities, inter-agency meetings, service promotion, and program quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching support to less experienced staff and contribute to team learning by sharing best practice approaches.

Requirements for Success

  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., degree or diploma) with professional experience in case management and homelessness services, including a minimum of 2 years working with vulnerable clients.
  • Proven ability to manage a caseload of clients with complex needs, demonstrating trauma-informed practice and a strengths-based approach.
  • Strong cultural capability and experience working with Aboriginal communities, with knowledge of local cultural protocols and systems, and ability to build respectful and professional relationships.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to manage administrative tasks and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Resilience and adaptability when working with clients experiencing distress, trauma, AOD use, and aggressive or uninhibited behaviours.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • A commitment to person-centred approaches and a belief in individuals’ capacity for recovery and growth, informed by lived experience and professional development.
  • Full driver licence with no restrictions.

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.

Your Benefits

To ensure our employees feel valued, empowered, and celebrated, we provide a range of employee benefits including:

  • Rewarding work – every day you know you’re making a real difference
  • Not-for-profit salary packaging, reducing your tax (details via AccessPay)
  • Free external, confidential counselling and access to chaplaincy support
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Opportunity to purchase additional annual leave
  • Extra leave including: Mission Australia Thank You Day & Work Anniversary Day off
