Job Description - Corporate Counsel, Construction and Property

About the role

At Rawson Group, we are currently hiring a qualified and experienced Corporate Counsel to be part of successful, established, and evolving organisation.  

This position would be ideal for someone who is dynamic in their approach with prior experience working with an internal legal team ideally also working in a property or construction role. The primary responsibility of the role is to support the Executive General Counsel and the legal team by understanding the business's strategy and objectives and providing solid legal counsel when dealing with front end property and construction transactions, general commercial matter and also building disputes. 

Reporting to the Executive General Counsel, your responsibilities will include:

  • Advise the business with respect to disputes to facilitate swift resolution and settlement of them including assisting with drafting, reviewing and negotiating deeds of release/settlement and preparing for NCAT matters. 
  • Supporting the Executive General Counsel with various development transactions.
  • Assisting the business with various property and construction related matters including reviewing and negotiating development agreements, put and call options, land contracts and leasing (but not conveyancing).
  • Assisting with drafting special conditions for HIA home building contracts and tenders. 
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements including service agreements, technology agreements, deeds of settlement, deeds of rescission, deeds of indemnity, marketing disclaimers and promotion terms and conditions, procurement agreements. 
  • Providing legal advice on privacy legislation, cyber security and other areas of legal practice.
  • Review Corporate Policies to meet legislative requirements and best practice standards.
  • Assists with supporting the Risk and Compliance Framework of Rawson Group.
  • Designing and delivering legal training to the business.
  • Supporting the Executive General Counsel with management of a legal panel.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A current Australian Legal Practicing Certificate
  • Have a strong technical legal ability and a genuine interest in working in the construction sector.
  • Greater than 5 years experience in a similar role – preferably some Law firm and in house experience 
  • Proven experience working in property/construction/general commercial law
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills. 
  • A proactive, positive, and energetic approach with a commitment to provide excellent service and build positive relationships with internal clients. 
  • Growth mindset and works collaboratively to get things done
  • Proven and strong experience with liaising with senior stakeholders of an organisation
  • Be able to multi-task and manage competing priorities.
  • Open to learning and constructive feedback. 
  • Willing to work as a part of team and autonomously.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to have positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • A confident, persuasive and cordial communication style.
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced and commercially minded environment.
