About the Position
The Customs Compiler is responsible for supporting the preparation and processing of import customs entries and related documentation to ensure shipments are cleared accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with Australian customs, biosecurity, and regulatory requirements.
Reporting to the Customs Supervisor, this role works closely with licensed customs brokers, operations teams, customers, overseas offices, carriers, and government agencies to support the timely clearance and delivery of freight. The role requires strong attention to detail, sound administrative capability, and a willingness to develop knowledge in customs, tariff classification, valuation, biosecurity, and freight forwarding procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Customs Compilation and Clearance Support
- Compile and prepare import customs entries under the direction of the Customs Supervisor and/or licensed customs broker.
- Review commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, airway bills, arrival notices and other shipping documents to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Assist with tariff classification, customs valuation, country of origin review and duty/GST calculations.
- Identify missing, inconsistent or incomplete documentation and follow up with customers, suppliers, overseas offices or internal teams as required.
- Support the preparation and lodgement of import declarations and related clearance documentation through the relevant customs systems.
- Assist with biosecurity and quarantine requirements, including identifying shipments that may require permits, inspections, treatment, or further documentation.
- Escalate complex classification, valuation, compliance, permit or regulatory matters to the Customs Supervisor or licensed customs broker.
- Monitor shipment clearance status and assist in resolving clearance delays.
Compliance and Record Keeping
- Ensure customs entries and supporting documents are prepared in line with company procedures and relevant Australian customs and biosecurity requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of customs documentation, client instructions, permits, rulings and correspondence.
- Assist with internal file checks, audits and compliance reviews as required.
- Follow standard operating procedures and support continuous improvement of customs compilation processes.
- Ensure confidentiality and appropriate handling of customer, supplier and shipment information.
- Support and contribute to maintaining Customs Department’s KPI requirements and contribute to continuous service improvement initiatives.
Customer Service and Stakeholder Communication
- Provide timely updates to internal stakeholders and customers regarding customs clearance status.
- Respond to routine customer and internal enquiries in a professional and helpful manner.
- Liaise with freight operations, customer service, transport providers, carriers and overseas offices to support the smooth movement of cargo.
- Build effective working relationships with customers, internal teams and external service providers.
- Support the Customs Supervisor and customs team with ad hoc operational and administrative tasks as required.
System Administration
- Accurately enter shipment and customs data into the company’s freight management and customs systems.
- Assist with preparing reports, clearance updates and operational records as required.
- Process and maintain customs-related information in accordance with company standards.
- Support invoice checking, cost verification or billing processes where required.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Essential:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

- Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Ability to follow processes and work within compliance requirements.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn customs and freight forwarding procedures.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Desirable:
- Previous experience in customs, freight forwarding, import operations, logistics or administration.
- Exposure to customs compilation, tariff classification, import declarations or shipping documentation.
- Familiarity with CargoWise One or similar freight forwarding/customs systems.
- Basic understanding of Australian customs, biosecurity, Incoterms, duty, GST and import clearance processes.
- Completion of, or willingness to undertake, relevant customs or logistics training.
