Design Manager - Tier 1 - $200M Project

The Client

One of Australia’s Top Turnkey Tier 1 Head Contractors, which provides the full range of building services, from design, consultation, and management to the construction and fit-out of large-scale projects between $50M and $200M in South Australia, recently won a project valued at around $200M+ that starts in a few months.

The Opportunity

You would be heading up the business's New Business and Strategy Division.

As the Design Manager on an upcoming prestigious $200 million commercial new-build project, you will be pivotal in orchestrating the design delivery process. 

Meticulous planning will be involved. Once the project moves onto the site in a few months, you will be involved right through to the delivery and handover, with an anticipated 30—to 36-month build program.

The Responsibilities

Your responsibilities and duties would include:

• Led and managed consultants to deliver high-quality design documentation on time, on budget, and in compliance with the project brief.
• Providing technical support about services to project teams in preconstruction and construction phase delivery
• Monitor and manage commercial outcomes while maintaining design intent and integrity through all project phases.
• Contribute to the identification, tendering, and conversion of ECI and Design and Construct opportunities.
• Develop and implement strategies for growing the ECI and Design and Construct Portfolio and pipeline, including in-time selection and employment of additional team members.
• Lead the review of the project design for regulatory and building compliance.
• Review the design for constructability in collaboration with the construction team and trade subcontractors to drive efficiencies during delivery.
• Actively participate in the methodology development for the project's delivery.
• Maintain design quality control management.
• Value Management
• Understanding and implementation of Building Codes, Standards & Compliance
• Building & Authority approvals
• Overseeing internal and external consultants, Design Documentation, and Coordination with Architects and Consultants
• Responsible for consultant engagement, contractual and risk assessment, and management
• Preparation and lodgement of DA's
• Preparation of feasibilities and various design configuration studies
• Design Risk & Opportunity Management
• Pre & Post Construction phase

The Experience 

• It would be ideal to have ten years of postgraduate experience in architecture/Construction/Engineering across a range of medium—to large projects across Australia. Hopefully, this experience will range between $50M and $100M throughout the last few years of your career.  
• A building background is preferred. If you come from an architecture background, you must have previous experience with a builder.
• Previous experience with commercial/education/industrial/health will be advantageous.  
• Experience in AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam are preferred but not required.
• In-depth knowledge of construction methods, materials, and building systems.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
• Strong leadership and team management abilities, with a track record of delivering projects on time and within budget over $30M.
• A construction-related qualification.
• Stability with previous employers
