Position Summary:

Position Summary: The Diabetes Staff Nurse Educator will provide professional nursing and diabetes education to nurses as well as develop, implement, and evaluate the diabetes nursing regimen for prescribed diabetes treatment. This position will also prepare training for OSH nurses in all aspects of diabetes care and work with the Regional and Diabetes Staff Nurse Supervisor to identify nurses in need of support and diabetes training.  The Diabetes Staff Nurse Educator will identify agency-covered schools without a regular nurse and provide direct support to parents and school personnel.  The Diabetes Staff Nurse Educator will serve as a resource to nurses and students and will play an instrumental role in developing policies and procedures as well as training.  Performs related work.


 


Reports to: Diabetes Supervisor of Nurses

Key Relationships: Works closely with OSH nurses, regional supervising nurses, school administrative staff, including paraprofessionals, the Principal and Assistant Principal; students needing diabetes care/seeking diabetes services; insulin and diabetes technology representatives; consults with parents/guardians regarding diabetes management and treatment goals and other recommendations to enhance a student’s functional ability within the classroom and home setting.


 


Responsibilities


 



  • Develops and implements individual treatment plans for students in need of diabetes care.

  • Develops and presents lessons in diabetes management, in close coordination with paraprofessionals to benefit students in the least restrictive environment, including providing hands on-training, materials, and protocols to paraprofessionals.

  • Provides annual and refresher training as well as student specific training to nurses, paraprofessionals, and other identified staff. 

  • Reviews medical and health records of students receiving diabetes care for completion of data.

  • Works with regional supervisors to identify nurses and agency covered schools without a regular nurse to provide support and training in diabetes care and devise appropriate interventions.

  • Develops relationships with insulin and technology representatives to facilitate diabetes training and support to nurses and school staff.   

  • Develops relationships with diabetes providers in their areas to serve as a liaison between providers, families, and schools, as needed.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary and parent conferences to discuss student progress and offers specific recommendations for diabetes health programs related to individuals and groups of students.

  • Assists in developing section 504 plans, promotes collaboration between Section 504 Coordinators, and serves as a resource for questions related to section 504 or IEP services.

  • Instructs and consults with teaching and supervisory staff on matters relating to diabetes services.

  • Prepares training opportunities for OSH nurses in all aspects of diabetes care and maintains database of training and implementation goals.

  • Functions as preceptor for nursing students from accredited nursing programs in local colleges and universities.

  • Contacts primary care providers and/or endocrinologists regarding students’ diabetes management related to the continuity of care both in school and at home.

  • Serves as a resource to OSH and School staff

  • Other activities as appropriate


 


Qualification Requirements:


 


Minimum


 



  • A valid New York State Registered Nurse License.


 


Plus


 



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or a health related field.

  • Significant experience providing care to children with diabetes.

  • Knowledge of diabetic education services and mastery of the full spectrum of diabetes technology, including insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring devices.

  • Experience as a pediatric diabetes nurse.

  • Certified Diabetes Nurse Educator (CDNE) credential or the ability to obtain diabetes nurse educator certification within two years of employment strongly preferred.


 


Preferred


 



  • Prior nursing experience in a school or public service setting.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Knowledge of health care agencies and services provided in the New York metropolitan area.

  • Flexible and willing to travel.  


 


Salary: $71,540 


(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not make less than their current salary.)
