EL2 Principal Legal Officer

This Department is at the forefront of national security and protecting and safeguarding Australia. The legal division is a dynamic and inclusive group, serving as an essential pillar that delivers comprehensive legal services to national security and military agencies. This EL2 position sits within the Dispute Resolution and Litigation branch, which provides strategic legal advice on all litigation and dispute resolution, on behalf of the department. The team is an integrated team of APS lawyers, paralegals, contracted lawyers and administrative staff. The team works on significant litigation matters and regularly works to Court deadlines.


Your new role


This role is central to upholding the legal integrity of the Department through the management of complex litigation cases, providing strategic legal advice, and representing the Department in legal proceedings. Managing a team of 4 staff, you would be responsible for the following:

• Lead and manage the litigation team, overseeing all aspects of legal disputes and proceedings.
• Represent the Department in court and before tribunals, providing robust legal advocacy.
• Develop litigation strategies for a variety of cases, including commercial, employment, and defence-related matters.
• Advise on risk management and mitigation in relation to potential and ongoing litigation.
• Collaborate with other departments to ensure a cohesive legal approach to defence matters.

What you'll need to succeed In order to be successful in this exciting, high-profile position, you will have the following:

• A legal qualification with a current practicing certificate, preferably with a focus on litigation.
• Extensive experience in litigation, including trial preparation and courtroom experience.
• Demonstrated leadership in managing a team of legal professionals in a high-stakes environment.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to provide clear, concise, and persuasive legal arguments.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with stakeholders at all levels.
• You must hold a baseline clearance or NV1 clearance
