Job Description - Environment & Sustainability Manager

Gamuda Engineering is a leading engineering and construction contractor specialising in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of transport, civil and energy infrastructure projects.

We are proud to have been appointed by Transport for NSW, in joint venture with DT Infrastructure, to deliver the Richmond Road Upgrade between the M7 Motorway and Townson Road in north-west Sydney. This significant project will enhance a key arterial corridor, easing congestion and improving connectivity across Sydney’s rapidly growing North West Growth Area.

As our team continues to grow, we remain focused on attracting talented professionals who share our commitment to excellence and innovation. We are building a high-performing, inclusive culture and aspire to be an employer of choice within the Australian infrastructure sector.

About the role

As the Environmental & Sustainability Manager, you will play a key leadership role in driving environmental compliance and sustainability outcomes across the Richmond Road Upgrade. You will work closely with project teams, clients, and stakeholders to embed best practice environmental management, lead sustainability initiatives, and oversee compliance performance across multiple sites.

This is a hands-on leadership position that blends technical expertise, strategic oversight, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership, offering the opportunity to make a tangible contribution to delivering more sustainable infrastructure outcomes.

Specific activities will include:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continual improvement of the CEMP, environmental management systems, sustainability frameworks, and associated project procedures across all construction work fronts.

  • Manage environmental approvals, compliance, and assurance activities including REF consistency assessments, addendum REF requirements, EPL coordination, TfNSW specifications, permits, audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.

  • Provide strategic and practical environmental advice to planning, design, procurement, and construction teams to support compliant, efficient, and program-aligned project delivery.

  • Interface directly with TfNSW, regulators, consultants, subcontractors, and approval authorities to manage environmental risks, approvals, and stakeholder requirements.

  • Lead the management of key environmental constraints and high-risk interfaces including heritage, biodiversity, waterways, contamination, utilities, noise and vibration, Out of Hours Works, and sensitive community areas.

  • Manage environmental incidents, unexpected finds, contamination issues, investigations, corrective actions, and lessons learnt processes to ensure timely resolution and continuous improvement.

  • Monitor, analyse, and report on environmental and sustainability performance metrics including waste, water, air quality, noise, flora and fauna, carbon emissions, energy use, and resource efficiency initiatives.

  • Lead environmental governance activities including compliance documentation, approvals, registers, KPI tracking, audit readiness, client reporting, and sustainability performance reporting obligations.

  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and training to project teams and subcontractors to promote environmental awareness, accountability, and a strong sustainability culture across the project.

Your skills and experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related discipline.

  • Extensive knowledge of NSW environmental legislation and sustainability frameworks, with experience on major infrastructure projects, TfNSW experience is highly regarded.

  • Proven experience leading environmental and sustainability functions on large-scale infrastructure or construction projects.

  • Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, mentor, and drive positive environmental and sustainability outcomes across project teams.

  • Demonstrated experience in environmental risk management, compliance auditing, incident management, and sustainability reporting.

  • Well-developed strategic thinking, organisational, and problem-solving capabilities, with a focus on continuous improvement and practical project delivery outcomes.
