About the role

The Evaluator plays a pivotal role in program evaluation to support high quality evaluation of departmental programs and initiatives that help to shape effective program delivery and policies in education.

We are seeking a skilled professional to join the Evaluation & Effectiveness team within the NSW Department of Education’s Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation. In this role, you will contribute to high-profile evaluations across schools and early childhood education and care settings and will contribute to the evidence base for department priorities including Universal Preschool.

Your strength in designing evaluation tools such as surveys and discussion guides, facilitating data collection through in-depth interviews and focus groups, and applying qualitative coding and analysis techniques will be highly regarded. You will play a key role in planning and delivering culturally responsive evaluations, visiting schools and ECEC services across the state to implement data collection, and report writing.

About you

• Understanding and/or experience with implementation of process and outcome evaluations.


• Experience in designing and/or facilitating data collection activities such as in-depth interviews, focus groups, and observations with a variety of stakeholder groups, and proficiency in qualitative coding and analysis.


• Understanding of the role of quasi-experimental design, statistical hypothesis testing, effect sizes and causal inference in evaluation


• Knowledge of and experience in applied research, particularly as it relates toqualitative analysis.


• Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department’s Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department’s Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Essential requirements of the role

• A degree in an applied social science e.g., evaluation, psychology, sociology, education and/or equivalent relevant professional experience, with an emphasis on research and evaluation, or equivalent experience.


• Hold a valid clearance to work with children (Working with Children Check for paid employment).


• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.
