About the Organisation
Aurukun Shire Council (ASC) is an Indigenous community with a population of around 1400 people. Council provides a variety of services to the community that include provision of education, health, community, and welfare services; operation of airport, postal and bank agencies; development and maintenance of roads and housing. Funding is received through both State and Federal governments.
About the Role
Reporting to the Director Community Service, the Family Support Worker will undertake an educative and supportive role in family child rearing practices and activities programs. You will encourage and support access to participation in early childhood education and care services.
Key Accountabilities
- Liaise and network with all relevant agencies
- Train, supervise and mentor Wik or Wik Waya person/s who will be employed
- Work to eliminate risk factors known to contribute to adverse developmental outcomes in children
- Identify strategies to address the behavioural and emotional problems in children including those that will enhance the skills and confidence in parents
- Conduct case management through individual and small group intervention strategies to improve parenting skills
- Develop and service activities may include (but are not limited to) information, advice and referral, individual support, family support, parenting programs and workshops, and other activities to maintain healthy functioning family life
- Work accountably, responsibly and effectively in a complex community environment with minimal supervision
- Source, manage and monitor funding for programs in liaison with Director of Community Services including the submission of regular reports
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
- Have attained or working towards attaining relevant Degree or Associate Diploma
- Related work experience
- Able to follow directions and take responsibility for your duties while working independently and as part of a team to achieve positive outcomes
- High level of commitment to undertake community based work and interact positively and work effectively in a remote Aboriginal Community
- High level of ability to interact sensitively and effectively when working with children, young people and families
- High level of communication, liaison, negotiation, networking, management and interpersonal skills
- Sound knowledge of, and ability to teach, a range of intervention strategies relating to child behaviour
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, with ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Indigenous people
- Safe Food Handling (Supervision)
- Positive Blue Card (working with children check)
- Manual Drivers licence

- A starting salary in the range of $75000.00 to $85000.00 pa dependent on experience and qualifications
