Finance Manager

We’re looking for a technically strong and commercially aware Finance Manager to take ownership of financial control, compliance reporting and the integrity of our general ledger and trust accounting at Athena.

About the role:

Reporting to the Head of Finance & Corporate Development, you will carry design authority and operational responsibility for the financial control function. You will be expected to identify gaps, challenge existing frameworks, and implement improvements with minimal direction.

As a Finance Manager in our team, you will gain exposure across all aspects of accounting and finance, with a focus on financial control & operations, including:

• Financial Control & Reconciliation Framework
  
  
  
  • Own and continuously improve the control & reconciliation framework across all material financial events, including customer cash flows, trust allocations, redraw processing, GL updates, and inter-entity transfers.
  
  
  • Implement and operate per-trust cash allocation reconciliations, moving beyond total cash integrity to independent allocation checks across Athena’s funding vehicles.
  
  
  • Maintain the bottom-up event-based control framework, ensuring every material financial event has a documented control owner, frequency, and independent source of truth.
  
  
  • Partner with Treasury, Technology, and Operations to ensure the control framework keeps pace with business complexity from new products, new funding vehicles, and system changes.
  
  
  
  


• Management Accounting & Financial Operations:
  
  
  
  • Take ownership of various month-end processes, including manual journals, reconciliation of cash flows, processing of payments, Treasury & Trust accounting, write-offs, and refunds.
  
  
  • Ensure high levels of compliance to applicable accounting standards and tax laws are always maintained.
  
  
  • Take ownership of the year-end process, including preparation of statutory accounts and being the direct point of contact for Auditors, assisting with audit queries and requests, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
  
  
  
  


• Taxation:
  
  
  
  • Assist with tax research & planning and internal advisory, including GST, R&D, FBT, and income tax.
  
  
  
  


• Corporate Finance & FP&A:
  
  
  
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting and financial planning, including ad hoc analysis as required.
  
  
  
  


• Process Improvement:
  
  
  
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of finance processes and procedures, ensuring efficiency and accuracy.
  
  
  
  

You have:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.


• CA qualified preferred (Athena is a CA recognised training employer).


• 4-6 years post-qualification experience in Audit or Risk in a Professional Services Firm. 


• Be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident when you apply.


• You are an intellectually curious, self-directed operator who takes accountability for outcomes.
