The Opportunity

Come and discover the opportunity to join our Plate Rolling Team at our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility as a Furnace Supervisor. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

The Plate Mill business produces various plate products for a large range of customers, both domestic and international. The Plate Rolling team converts steel slab products into plate by controlling the heating and cooling processes within the Plate Mill to produce a range of plate products and sizes for our customers. This quality-focused process consists of reheating furnaces, rolling mills, hot leveller and cooling bed area.

In the Plate Rolling Team, the Furnace Controller is essential in optimising the operating and control systems of the furnace. Supporting the furnace operating and maintenance teams, you’ll carry out tests and fault find through routine inspections of the furnaces and equipment, ensuring that hazards are consistently managed. You’ll identify and implement continuous improvement outcomes and be the communication link between management and the Plate Rolling team.

This position is a 7-day, 12 hour rotating shift.

What Will You Do?

You’ll support the operation of the plate rolling process by being the subject matter expert of the reheat furnaces to meet our rolling mill and product quality requirements. You will:

  • identify and mitigate any potential and active safety issues relating to the furnace and its operation
  • ensure the furnace is maintained and operated in accordance to our environmental license requirements
  • provide technical support and problem-solving insight as issues arise
  • prioritise work and resolve problems effectively and efficiently
  • provide training information reviews, updates, and teachings for our operating and maintenance teams
  • identify and communicate potential furnace disruptions by working collaboratively with the maintenance and operations teams
  • build effective relationships to drive the continuous reliability of our furnaces

As an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual, you will enjoy drawing on your technical knowledge and coaching and developing peers and colleagues. You will bring:

  • either experience working in a similar operations role or a Mechanical, Electrical trade qualification
  • a commitment to your own safety and wellbeing and care for others
  • an understanding of heavy industrial equipment, technology and operations
  • the ability to prioritise work and resolve problems effectively and efficiently
  • a demonstrated ability to coach and develop others to enhance capability
