General Practitioner - RVTS Targeted Recruitment (Tiwi Islands, NT)

The Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS) assists the recruitment of doctors to targeted rural and remote communities with high medical workforce need, by including the RVTS GP Vocational Training program as a component of the doctor recruitment package. Since 2018, RVTS has successfully assisted the recruitment of 20 doctors to 24 rural and remote locations across Australia, including 9 Aboriginal Medical Services.

Julanimawu Clinic is the only health service on the island and is located on the capital of the Tiwi Islands that houses the main administrative and finance divisions of Tiwi Islands Local Government. Julanimawu is a primary care service also provides all emergency care for the community. Remote Area Nurses (RANs) alongside Tiwi drivers and AHP provide the after-hours on-call service with support from the DMO (district medical officer) on-call. Patients requiring admission are evacuated via Careflight to Royal Darwin Hospital.

The clinic provides acute and chronic disease services, along with programs including child health, palliative care, hospital-in-thehome, rheumatic heart disease program, women’s health, midwifery services and mental health. There is a significant burden of disease in the community with many patients with complex care requirements – there are no boring days! Residential doctors are not on-call but if available may be called in for only significant emergencies.
