Job Description - Grant Writer & Coordinator (StrongMinds Global)

Reporting to: Senior Manager of Institutional Giving

Location: Remote (US Northeast) or in person Maplewood, NJ

About the role:

StrongMinds is seeking a talented writer and researcher to support the Institutional Giving Department within our development team. This individual will be a key player in supporting the Development Department’s fundraising efforts through writing, editing, and proofreading a variety of written materials for foundation, corporate, government, and institutional donors, as well as supporting prospect research and grants/relationship tracking. The role supports Institutional Giving in grant writing, drafting progress reports for current foundation partners, and letters of interests and proposals for new prospects. The role also serves as a Content Liaison between the Development and Communications Departments to maintain consistency and promote information-sharing. In addition, the Coordinator will assist overall fundraising efforts through prospecting for new funders, conducting research, and assisting the Senior Manager with tracking grant and relationships data through our grants management platform, Instrumentl .

Responsibilities:

  • Writing, Editing, Grants & Proposal Development Support (60%):
    • Draft, edit, and proofread a range of written materials related to fundraising including grants, progress reports, letters of interest, concept notes, proposals, research briefs, outreach emails, etc.
    • Develop targeted content that leverages StrongMinds’ data to make compelling arguments that are responsive to donors’ interests.
    • Develop content for special projects as assigned, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and messaging standards.
    • Provide editing and proofreading for pieces written by others in Development/Communications.
    • Gather supporting documentation for proposals and reports according to stated requirements.
  • Prospect Research/Relationship Management Support (20%):
    • Conduct prospect research as assigned on potential funding opportunities.
    • Collaborate with the Development Coordinator to share prospecting/relationship-mapping information as needed to minimize overlapping efforts.
    • Contribute to overall fundraising efforts by preparing meeting briefs that include all necessary information for attendees, ensuring thorough preparation for meetings with current and potential funders.
    • Undertake additional research as needed and as assigned to support fundraising efforts.
    • Use Instrumentl grants management tool to perform prospect research and assist with tracking deliverables.
    • Add relationship notes to Instrumentl and assist with managing team tasks related to current and prospective donors.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the Development and Communications Departments regarding knowledge and content management.
  • Support requests for information/content for Comms projects including award submissions, media pieces, etc.
  • Collaborate closely with the Content Officer in Communications; work together with Development Operations Manager to create a process/tools for sharing content
  • Collaborate with Communications on the development of Style Guides, Messaging Guides, and other tools related to content.
  • Perform special projects as assigned for Development/Communications.

Key Relationships:

  • Reports to the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving.
  • Works closely with the Senior Director of Communications and Content Officer in the Communications team.
  • Collaborates with the Development and Communications teams to promote content alignment across departments.

Skills Abilities & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience writing preferably within the non-profit context.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Skilled in crafting narratives targeted at specific audiences.
  • Deadline-driven with exceptional time management skills.
  • Collaborative and flexible, able to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively within a team environment.

Location: This position is available from a remote location in the Eastern US time zone or in the Maplewood, NJ office of StrongMinds.
