The Opportunity

 


The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Parliamentary Service Level 1/2 Gym Instructor / Receptionist within the Commercial Operations branch.


 


Australian Parliament House (APH) Canberra is the meeting place of our nation and is one of our nation's most important buildings. This position offers you the chance to be a part of democracy in action. The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) supports the functions of the Australian Parliament and the work of parliamentarians. The iconic building welcomes over 725,000 visitors each year including some 127,000 school children. It is home to some 1,300 people working across the building, rising to more than 3,500 people on sitting days and peaking at around 10,000 people in the building on the busiest day of the year each Budget Day.


 

Who we are looking for

  


DPS is seeking a highly motivated gym instructor and receptionist to oversee the gymnasium facilities, provide personalised exercise programs for members and staff and lead group exercise classes, respond to enquiries and manage financial transactions. The preferred candidate must be able to work flexible shifts from 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday, to ensure comprehensive coverage and support for facility operations.


 


Job Specific Requirements


 



  • Nationally Accredited IV in Fitness Certificate.

  • AUSactive Registration or the ability to obtain within an agreed timeframe.

  • Nationally Accredited First Aid Certificate.

  • The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Immediate supervisor: Health and Recreation Manager


Duty Statement


Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the specified classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:


Gymnasium



  1. Oversee the gymnasium facilities, including gym and pool areas, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all users.


  2. Provide personalised exercise programming and instruction tailored to individual member needs.


  3. Lead group exercise classes, fostering an engaging and motivating atmosphere.


  4. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of gym equipment to uphold safety and hygiene standards.


  5. Administer first aid and respond to health-related incidents for members within the Health and Recreation Centre.



Reception



  1. Respond to inquiries via in-person, email, and telephone, facilitating facility and class bookings while issuing rental equipment to clients.


  2. Manage financial transactions, including cash handling, operating the cash register and credit card systems, and reconciling daily cash receipts.


  3. Work flexible shifts from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday, to ensure comprehensive coverage and support for facility operations.


Selection Criteria

 



  1. Possess comprehensive knowledge and experience in the health and fitness industry, including the delivery of individual and group exercise programs.


  2. Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide exceptional service to a diverse clientele, including high-profile clients.


  3. Exhibit a proven ability to work collaboratively and adaptively within a small team environment.


  4. Show proficiency in learning and executing routine administrative and operational tasks, including the use of computers, cash registers, credit card processing, and office equipment.


  5. Maintain a high level of health and fitness to safely and effectively perform required physical tasks.

Salary

  


Currently, the salary range for this position is $60,027 - $76,554 per annum.


 

Conditions of Employment

 


Employment opportunities at the department are subject to a range of conditions prescribed in the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 which include:



  • Australian citizenship: Section 22 of the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 requires that employees of the Parliamentary Service are generally required to be Australian citizens. However, if you are not an Australian citizen you may be considered for engagement on the condition that you are able to gain Australian Citizenship within a specified time. Failure to obtain citizenship within the timeframe could lead to termination of employment.

  • Loss and resumption of Australian citizenship: Under historical provisions of the Australian Citizenship Act 1948 (section 17), some Australian citizens automatically lost their citizenship if they voluntarily acquired the citizenship of another country between 26 January 1949 and 3 April 2002. This loss occurred by operation of law and may not have been known to the individual at the time. Although these provisions were repealed in 2002 to allow dual citizenship, the repeal did not restore citizenship that was previously lost. Individuals who believe they may be affected are recommended to seek advice about resuming their Australian citizenship. Further information, is available on the Department of Home Affairs website.

    • Applicants who progress to the offer stage with our department who have been affected by the loss of citizenship as outlined above will be required to demonstrate within a reasonable time that they have resumed, or are actively undertaking the process to resume, Australian citizenship.



  • Security clearance and character clearance: the preferred applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the level specified, as well as complete and be deemed suitable through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.

  • Health assessment: a pre-employment health assessment will be required where there are physical or medical requirements for the role.

  • External Work Approval: Employees must seek approval for any paid employment outside the department and declare voluntary activities that could impact their role.
