Job Description - Head of Payroll

About the role  

The Head of Payroll oversees the fortnightly payroll of a workforce of around 6,000 team members across both salaried and hourly paid. This role is responsible for the accurate,timely, and compliant processing of employeeremunerationacross all business units. This role drives operational excellenceand thecontinuous improvementofend-to-endpayroll activities, in addition totransformation initiatives within payroll, aligning withorganisationalgoals and shared services strategy. 

 

This is a permanent position, based at St Leonards with hybrid opportunities.

Key Responsibilities include 

 

Leadership & Team Management 

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the payroll team 

  • Build a trusting relationship within the payroll team 

  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and service excellence 

 

Payroll Operations 

  • Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for multiple streams, ensuring compliance with Fair Work legislation, Awards, EAs and internal policies 

  • Manage onboarding, terminations, and pay cycle integrity 

 

Compliance & Governance 

  • Ensure adherence to statutory requirements and audit standards 

  • Maintain robust controls and risk management practices 

  • Proactive in ensuring HammondCare’s overall compliance requirements 

 

Systems & Process Improvement 

  • Lead payroll transformation projects and continuous improvement initiatives 

  • Contribute to the optimisation of payroll systems (e.g., UKG,iChris, Kronos) and integration with HRIS platforms(Workday). While systemsdoesnot report directly into this role, the Head of Payroll will be a critical stakeholder for ensuring payroll requirements are scoped accurately 

 

Stakeholder Engagement 

  • Collaborate with People & Learning, Finance, IT and other enabling functions to deliver seamless employee experience 

  • Act as a trusted advisor on payroll matters to senior leadership 

  • Model confidence internally and externally when it comes to payroll practices 

 

About You  

 

  • Commitment to engage and align with HammondCare’s Christian Mission, Motivation and Mission in Action  

  • Deep technical expertise in payroll and iChris payroll system and the flexibility to be ‘hands on’ as well as a strategic thinker  

  • At least 10 years’ experience managing payroll in complex and large organisations  

  • Demonstrated experience managing and supporting a team  

  • Experience managing multiple enterprise agreements across a large workforce  

  • Exceptional attention to detail  

  • Strong stakeholder engagement with the ability to translate complex information into clear, concise and easily understood language  

  • Experience with Workday, UKG and Kronos - desirable 

  • Experience in healthcare, aged care or hospital settings - desirable
